Hi, For all of us using DSL on hard drives, it would be great if, when there are new versions released, we could use apt-get to update our systems to the latest version without having to reinstall from scratch. Posted by libretto on Dec. 17 2003,00:43
I'll second that!

I'd like to use Synaptic to upgrade!

Yeah that would be nice! But it isn't going to happen any time soon. This isn't a corporation, or even a big non-profit, it is just a few of guys hacking on their home computers in their spare time. Posted by chuck54 on Dec. 29 2003,21:35
As i understand it, an apt server isnt very complicated. A web or ftp server, with the files layed out right. I will look in to this more i think, as it would be pretty useful.

-- thinking about it more carefully, the dsl binaries are customised by john arent they? So this would mean re-packing as .deb files. head - wall - bang ( My wall is getting pretty pissed off today.) Posted by TyphoonMentat on Dec. 30 2003,08:09
Yes, it would involve repacking everything into .deb files and essentially cleaning up DSL so it adheres to the Debian standards. Unfortunately, it would be much more difficult to implement an upgrade system which could handle other changes as well, such as a changing of startup scripts, for instance.I agree with John, DSL isn't a main big-business distro; after all, it's originally designed to run from a CD.:) |
