new set of desktop icons?Forum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: new set of desktop icons? started by: davide Posted by davide on Dec. 11 2003,19:11
I had a look at feather linux's website, following a post of a few days ago..what I noticed most is that from screenshots it look very nice..and, honestly, it looks cooler than dsl.don't get me wrong, I do LOVE dsl, but I think the set of desktop icons feather linux uses are much nicer that the ones used in dsl. here you have a screenshot < screenshot > Any one agrees? what about using them for next release (it'd be a minor change, I imagine)...after all that distro used some code from dsl, as I understood from the threads...so it could be a kind of exchange...or maybe someone that is a good at drawing could draw a brand new set of icons for dsl... just wondering... Honestly I think the crystal/bubble icons are getting very tired these days.

Personally, I don't really care what the icons look like. Far more important to me is the ability to add and delete them, as we can the menu now.

Speaking of which, what is involved in adding or deleting desktop icons in DSL? I know how to get rid of and add programs and change the menu, but so far have not found where I can add or delete the desktop icons. Thanks.

Persoanlly I hate all icons. Love Flux for its chic & bleak look:D Posted by DrWatt on Dec. 11 2003,22:16
Yeah, but Hasty, I once owned a torquise leisure suit and wore a puka bead necklace.

hasty, that's why they are optional. How about this? If anybody would like new icons in DSL, how about displaying them and we'll take a poll. If a majority likes them more than the current ones I'll use the new ones. Please pick specific icons for each app and not just point to an icon spread. Feather's icons are Feather's . I like them just as they are. I added the OpenOffice butterfly to my desktop. I would say leave them be.

it seems that a lot of people like actual icons.better so. it was not an important issue, after all, and also any one can customize, if he wants. Posted by hasty on Dec. 12 2003,19:29
Ouch I've always felt that menus and icons were a duplication of effort. It's probably my desire for an uncluttered worktop......but it always struck me that the essence of DSL was one of restraint in hardware demands. regards.... Posted by hasty on Dec. 12 2003,19:32

Speaking of restraint it should also be invoked for "torquise leisure suits" and their wearers regards.... Posted by DrWatt on Dec. 13 2003,21:39
Mission accomplished - I now have a desktop with only the icons I want. The rest are in the menus, which also contain my extra apps. Very sweet and clean< http://www.geocities.com/smyrna5/NewIcons.png > They are pretty easy to change, once you know how. Each icon has a link and a gif in /home/damnsmall/.xtdesktop or whatever user desktop you are using. For icons you don't want just move them to another directory. I made an extra directory there called saved. Open one of the the .lnk files with a text editor and you will see that its location, gif, and command is easily changed. Enjoy. Arrrgh!! Crappy free servers. Try this link instead< http://www.hyperwall.com/~larbo/NewIcons.png > Hopefully that one works. Posted by DStrick64 on Dec. 19 2003,01:31
Good. You can also edit the text label to what you want, which is nice. The xZGV icon has me puzzled. What is it?

Its an image viewer (jpg, gif, etc). If you have some images just open it and view them.
