hi, i havent much experience with linux so it might sound stupid but could i create a router with an old k6-350 256mb which i found dismantled in my wardrobe earlier today, i reckon i have enough pci and isa network cards in the loft somewhere to fill up all the slots, could i just link it to my crappy ntl modem and configure it as a router somehow?

You can make a firewall/router system out that box with no problems

You can either use DSL and then create your own IPTABLES filters, or

get a firewall/router program called < SMOOTHWALL >, which makes just a firewall/router box, nothing more, nothing less...

If you want services such as print services, Apache, SMTP, or whatnot then get  < CLARKCONNECT >, or just do a google search for linux routers or whatnot

DSL is classified as a desktop, why mess with "perfection"

I've never set up a router myself, but Googling "linux" and "router" returns lots of options, including many router/firewall distros which run from floppy disk and claim to be easy to set up without much Linux experience. Don't know if you intend to dedicate a box as a router, but a system with minimal RAM and only a floppy drive and no CD-ROM or hard drive wouldn't use much electricity.

Coupla examples:

< http://www.coyotelinux.com/ >

Anyone else have experience with a dedicated router using distros like these?

is smoothwall just a firewall or a firewall and router?

i have an old 120mhz system with 32mb and a disk drive and no hard disk somewhere - i will look into it :)

Coyote rocks.  Don't even need a hard drive just a floppy drive.

Grim, using Coyote as a router do i need a hd for that (i.e. just no hd for the firewall)?

gonna try it out - thanks people - great thread :) thank you :P

I've used Freesco for many years.
Either version 0.3.2 or 0.2.7 work fine.
Good forums, lots of patches and plugins for other stuff.
I suggest adding the paranoid firewall from
< Freesco Firewall for Paranoid People > -
I have Darkstat - ( traffic analyser )
Edna - ( mp3 server )
MC - midnight commander
Includes dhcp and caching dns servers,
FTP, Web, telnet servers too, which
can be accessed either public or local only.
Runs from floppy, or can be installed to HD.
minimum 2 isa nics , 386, 8 megs ram
(Even a 486-33 w/ 16 megs ram keeps up with
dsl speeds easily with 6 users on our localnet )
Find out more here - < www.freesco.org >
