Upgraded Dillo?Forum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Upgraded Dillo? started by: jamesgecko Posted by jamesgecko on Aug. 04 2005,16:54
Are there any plans to upgrade dillo to the more current 0.8.5? It's more secure and it seems to handle links and rendering things better. Also, I found this cool patch set that adds internationalization, GUI configuration, Anti-aliasing and scaled fonts, BASIC authorization support, Referer support, Meta-refresh support, not to mention updated tabs, frames, and SSL support that work with the latest version of Dillo. The patched source is about 100Kb bigger then normal, but its still pretty small when you consider everything they crammed in there. < link > Is there any intrest for including this in the next version of dsl? I mean, I know Firefox covers a lot of this, but firefox runs really slowly on older computers, which I understand are dsl's target system. Posted by cbagger01 on Aug. 04 2005,22:02
Funny you should mention this. The version of Dillo that is included in the DSL livecd is a similar "patched" version of Dillo 0.7.3 so the concept is valid for DSL.Can you complile this version and then submit it as a myDSL extension? After some testing, it might be a good candidate for a future version of DSL. Posted by mikshaw on Aug. 05 2005,02:34
I just installed the patched version, and it looks goood. I particularly like the tabs.If it had javascript support, I'd probably use it instead of firefox as my main browser. Posted by adssse on Aug. 05 2005,04:21
I would really be interested in a .dsl of this new Dillo. I really like Dillo as it is about the fastest browser for my old machine, but often times it does not display correctly and links do not work.

heh...I never noticed before that dillo already has tabs in DSL =o)A quick test got the new patched dillo running, with errors. There are a few extra libs required, including libXft2 (might work with 1.1, but the first test failed). After including the libs it wanted, it would start, but I got a repeating error "no support enc". Apparently there is more to building dillo for DSL than it seemed. Are people still interested in this?

I am still interested. I really enjoy dillo because it is light and quick compared to firefox and opera. Unfortunately it doesnt correctly display all of the pages I regularly visit so I am using the opera.uci extension right now. But I would be interested to know if there are any plans for this or if there are any drawbacks to the new verison (ie more bloated, slower ...).

Do you know if the new version really renders the pages you have issues with any better, or you're just hoping?

I am just hoping, I have not looked at it because I dont have much experience installing stuff yet.
