Does anyone try to install VMware into DSL?
Posted by fizzpop on Feb. 23 2006,18:37
I'm trying to!
I figure that DSL should make a ideal host for VMware workstation, so as to leave maximum resources availible for the VM's that run on top.
BUT - having compiler problems. The vmware install script, vmware-config.pl needs lots of things:
GCC, make, kernel source, etc
I downloaded most every DSL extension I could find, but I cannot get the compiler to work.
Tried TCC. says sorry, must compile tcc first with GCC.
Got latest GCC. wont compile, it needs an earlier GCC first.
got gcc1.dsl and no go there as the gcc version doees not match the kernel.
any "make" I try says it cannot find a rule.
ARRRGH!
How on earth to the DSL maintainers compile thiers????
I don't have broadband, my dsl isn't connected so this makes
apt-get impossible.
Anybody else have a solution?

I am running DSL on the new VMware server that they are giving away & on VMware Workstation, but to run the VMware server/workstation on dsl will be a challenge.

I will see what I can do, it will probably raise more questions then answers.   :)

I now have installed VMware server on to DSL as a host OS. It is installed completely, however configuring it is proving to be difficult.

The problem is, that the configuration complains after installing the gcc1.dsl that the kernel is configured with version 2.95.4 and that the gcc is currently version 3.3.4. Does anyone know where to get the older gcc from, google searches find 2.95.3 but not 2.95.4?
Thanks

Yes I saw the GCC release issue too. Please check the GCC prerequisites - I found
that that you needed an earlier GCC to compile the one you want!

Well, I've voted with my wallet - donated $30 to DSL... here's hoping that
John will give us a hand if he picks this issue up.

I now think that compiling a DSL app on DSL is not practical. Do you know what
version of Knoppix or Debian is used to create DSL and what libraries are used?
Especially what John Roberts uses - that should make the VMWare compile easier.

Don't know if this will help, but I recently compiled the pcmcia modules within dsl.  I installed the gnu-utils and the gcc dsl packages.  I also downloaded the source code for the linux kernel associated with the version in DSL (I think 2.4.28) and put that in /usr/src/linux.  I was able to compile with no issues.

I assume the same could be done for the vmware modules.

VMware on DSL will now work, however I have been working out the bugs under vmware server, and vmware will not allow a virtual machine under a virtual machine so I will install it on a hd and see if it will still work properly. Then I will post how to do it, for everyone else. This has been one of the most difficult things I have done, only to findout the fix was simple... just goes to show you their is always someone out there that is smarter.
Smooth flights

DSL does work as a host OS for VMware, it installs easy but hardware requirements are high.
The machine you load this on must have 256megs memory min. more is better. Guest OS was almost unusable with less then 512 megs of ram. The video card that you use must also be detected correctly by DSL. I would also not use a cpu that is less then 1ghz & no Celerons. Min of 10gig hd space, or whatever you are going to need.

The easy way:
Download the DSL 2.2b iso and do an hard drive(not a frugal) install to your machine. It boots with some insmod errors on my machines but works fine.
Once the OS is installed, install the following extensions:
gcc1.dsl
kernelsource.dsl
libc6.dsl

Next:
enable apt-get.
Then in a Root shell type: apt-get install gcc patch

DSL is now ready for VMware...
Download the VMware Server or VMware workstation and install it as instructed from VMware. You will need to register with VMware in order to get a license number.

Smooth flights...
