Bootdisk that can boot from PCMCIA deviceForum: DSL Ideas and Suggestions Topic: Bootdisk that can boot from PCMCIA device started by: Vies Posted by Vies on Sep. 07 2005,16:03
Would it be possible to do a similar bootdisk for PCMCIA as there is for USB.I have currently old laptop without HDD, and I would like to use DSL from CF-card in PCMCIA-cf reader. Since my BIOS don't support PCMCIA booting, bootdisk would be appreciated. Thank you Posted by farmall on Sep. 08 2005,21:01
Cool idea. It would leave the single USB port on many old machines available, and PCMCIA/CF adapters fit INSIDE the laptop for ease of transportation. The adapters are cheap (about $8) so many users could take advantage of this.

I have done no research on the subject, but my guess is that there isn't enough room on a floppy disk to contain the pcmcia subsystem and required drivers.I hope that someone will look more closely at the situation and prove me wrong. It is certainly do-able to create a custom pcmcia bootcd that will then transfer control over to the filesystem inside the PCMCIA device. A good idea might be to search the knoppix forums to see if someone else has already addressed this problem for older versions of knoppix. Then we can apply the same solution for DSL. |
