Posted by torp on April 21 2006,13:49i finally got the knoppix 5.0 dvd.......WOW! holy-hell-of-a-software-repository! man there are so many packages on this disk....wow. this is really the power users linux. so i am running this on my wife's winblows machine (2.7ghz, 2gb ram, 200gb hd) and it sees everything, even has a working webcam module. it boots kind of slow, but once its up in the toram mode it flies. i haven't the stones to mess around with the ntfs writing ability, but i can sure read from ntfs........more to follow on this (long as the better half doesn't catch me messing with her writing box).
Posted by muskrat on April 21 2006,15:20Is that a bought disk or a download burned disk?
Knoppix has always been a slow loading OS, but they sure have the auto HD and configuration down pat. I know of several other minor distros that use that script.
Posted by lovdsl on April 21 2006,15:30The last time I booted up knoppix it had about 10 or 12 wordprocessors and non worth typeing on..who with a machine powerfull enough to run it is interested in command line text editors..for what you need to run it you would think they would just pick the best and leave the rest...kinda like...well dsl..only bigger...dare I say..NOT..I think knoppix needs a lesson in frugal thinking..then again I have not booted 5.0

Bought it on ebay for .99......
lovedsl.....dont get me wrong. dsl is my daily driver. my little lappy would be slower than leap year solar eclipses trying to run knoppix 5.0. but for somebody with power to spare, there is just no comparing the 2 distros. we are truly talking apples and oranges. much of what we know today as dsl springs from knoppix internals, and it is good stuff. no for those of us with "legacy" machines, dsl is king. but for my money the knoppix 5.0 distro is by far and away the best "power computing" livecd.
Posted by mikshaw on April 21 2006,22:09As I see it, "much of what we know today as dsl" comes from Robert's hard work and innovative thinking. DSL actually has very little in common with Knoppix once the knoppix-autoconfig script finishes its run.
Posted by humpty on April 23 2006,06:40I haven't actually used knoppix before.
Am I to understand that knoppix pre-installs everything on the iso?
How does knoppix save the user data?
Posted by tedmoore99 on April 23 2006,11:39knoppix lets you save the config files to hd and/or create a persistent file on the hd for the usr. Works well, but as has been said, It runs slower than dsl on older machines.

i agree 100% mikshaw. mega-props to both Robert and John!
Posted by lovdsl on April 25 2006,00:33Torp..Hey, I'm glad you are excited about k5 but I was not compareing dsl and knoppix. I was pointing out that knoppix was loaded with excessive duplication..
.it does need a powerfull unit to run well... and needs.. a good note pad, a mediun fast loading text editer with spell check, and a full blown word processor....Joe, mary, and jane added to that is just bloat.
.I agree it has a lot of cool stuff..maby they deleted the bloat in 5..will get on that...any way enjoy..it's just talk
Posted by ADamnSmallLinux on May 09 2006,18:44Knoppix can also take less time to boot
see "Acelerated knoppix"
it's a knoppix with a cloop file with it's block reanged for booting more quickly
Posted by torp on May 10 2006,02:52my uptime on knoppix 5.0 DVD is now 32 days 14 hours and 26 minutes..........not too worried about bootup time. i have found several bugs in the system though....guess thats why klaus is taking so long with the CD ver.......
