Wish that the eee pc701 was at Linux World.I would have liked to try DSL on this machine. Many people at the convention were asking about this laptop. Posted by Andreas on Aug. 12 2007,16:10
Let the eee pc come to the real world!Up to now only announcements. Or can you buy it anywhere? Posted by lucky13 on Aug. 12 2007,16:40
Not yet. Last I heard, Asus pushed it back til September or October. Posted by humpty on Aug. 13 2007,08:29
The screen looks constrained with that thick black border, otherwise I would be sure to buy one. Posted by WDef on Sep. 03 2007,09:44
Has anyone managed to get their hands on one of these?I've been told that it is unobtainable. Is it vaporware? Posted by jpeters on Sep. 04 2007,08:19
I wonder if the bios even boots from the USB (it doesn't have a CDrom or floppy). I've never understood why "poor countries" are supposed to need devices like this ultra-lightweight toy, when used, non-Vista compatible PC's far more useful could be easily obtained much cheaper. Gladly this wasn't targeted to "poor" countries, just the rich but cheap -.-When the kids got their hands on the OLPC in there, guess what was the first they used them for? Yes. . So much need for computers... Posted by roberts on Sep. 16 2007,06:44
Specs have changed and the prices are up.Now taking pre-orders < Allasus > Posted by mikshaw on Sep. 16 2007,14:37
Lowered specs and higher prices seems to be pretty much routine when developing new hardware concepts. A decade from now very few will remember the olpc or eee in their current state, when portable pcs will be as cheap and widespread as portable music players are today (not talking about necessarily ipod here, but just music players in general...cd and radio included). It was not a joke. It was a news headline that spread all over the net.I got waves of disgust too when reading that.. Posted by mikshaw on Sep. 16 2007,21:29
Actually I was referring more to the way in which you worded your comment, 'Gladly this wasn't targeted to "poor" countries', as if wanting to see was a disgusting trait that doesn't plague teenagers in wealthy societies. I can see it maybe being said as an off-color joke, but that's not the way it appeared to me.In any case, I don't find their behavior surprising. 93.987% of the internet is (not a real statistic, just hyperbole), and many people, especially teenagers, are preoccupied with sex. Excerpt from Report by Org to the Planet ZYUT:"The beings that call themselves 'human' have organs called genitals that they use to procreate and excrete waste fluid, which are entirely natural and necessary processes. However, if a visual record is made of these organs or the act of procreation, the record is called "ography' and is subject to a supposed taboo, despite the fact that these records are widely distributed and available, and especially used for self-pleasuring by young males using computers (called 'geeks') who suffer from a lack of frequent access to females for these purposes. Analyst Zoopg is at a loss to explain why images of natural and healthy acts such as procreation or of humans' own bodies should be taboo, however FRthyg thinks this appears to be related to systematic repression aimed at political control and embuing the human body with artificial levels of psychological power. This power is routinely taken advantage of by some human groups to sell things or manipulate other humans with peculiar emotions called 'guilt' and 'shame'. Similarly humans elevate some of their number to great social status based almost entirely on their degree of attractiveness. Other humans then feel inferior to these paragons and are thus manipulated by groups in charge of these. If humans did not keep themselves so ignorant and ashamed of their organs and procreative act, and if the procreative act were more freely regarded, it is clear that this 'ography' would have little use. This is in line with the other strange illogical behaviors we have observed in this dysfunctional species ..." -- Translated by M***Ubdtwhya Posted by curaga on Sep. 18 2007,14:55
Heh, well said! Posted by spotslayer on Sep. 20 2007,22:15
Well to get back to the Asus in question. I realize these are not shipping yet but when someone get the chance to test one with DSL I would really be interested to know the results. Somehow I don't think the OS is going to be as slick and slim as Damn Small. I wonder if all the hardware will work out of the box. D Posted by jpeters on Sep. 21 2007,20:24
Wonderful logic; kindof like saying addiction to junk food is the result of lack of access to healthy food. Posted by WDef on Sep. 22 2007,09:10
That would certainly be true if the hot health foods only hang out with the jocks.
Posted by curaga on Sep. 22 2007,14:52
And being a jock comes from not having access to computers? ;)
Posted by jpeters on Sep. 22 2007,19:39
and who ever heard of a jock being interested in ography....

It is called *irony*.Really, the Kyutians have got more important things to worry about than the overly literal use of dubious social typologies and mixed metaphors. Read: I'm not taking the flame bait chaps. Now, where did I put my copy of Big Mamas On Bikes Do Dallas? Posted by jpeters on Sep. 23 2007,01:55
You mean "Big_Mama.uci" ? Is it out of testing yet? |
