I had some files and I deleted them but the hard drive meter says that space is still being used where is the trash bin in DSL? because I deleted the file and its not where it was but the hard drive space is still shown as being used up.

There is no trash bin. When you delete a file it gets deleted.Where were the files? If they were somewhere in /ramdisk it has no effect on harddrive space. Posted by xmikeox on July 31 2006,03:57
naw they where is /home/dsl/ it's just that the amount of space is the same as before I deleted them which confuses me a bit

/home/dsl is on the ramdisk. /home is a simlink to /ramdisk/home.Anyway, do you know what no posts like 'help me' means? ;) Posted by xmikeox on Aug. 01 2006,07:07
Sorry about posting in wrong forum mods feel freeto dlt or move. Okay so if its in the ramdisk and it has no effect on hd space then why does it say its having an effect? and how do I get it to display the correct amount of hardrive space left?

We could use a little more information on this. Like, is it frugal install, hdinstall, from CD?My answer could apply to frugal at least. I don't run hdinstall or from CD so I don't know about those. When DSL boots up it creates a ramdisk. This is basically an image of a harddisk stored in RAM (or swap) (or can be created on the hdd). The size of this ramdisk is given when created, ie 1Gb, now that ramdisk takes up 1Gb in RAM or on the hdd. You create, edit, delete files from/to said ramdisk as if it were a regular physical disk, but the size of it is always 1Gb. You can delete all the files from /home/dsl, but the ramdisk /home/dsl "lives in" is still going to be whatever size it was when it was created. Posted by doobit on Aug. 01 2006,18:40

i'm no expert in this area, but i believe the ramdisk size stays the same unless the o.s runs out of memory and needs to reclaim some of it.

Yea, you can see the memory cache by using `free` or `top`, and the amount currently being used.

I have a hd install and I was talking about the hd space meter in the top right corner that always loads on boot you know what im talking about? it has all the system information like the amout of processes, ram usage and all that how would I reset the file system hd space?
