When I use Opera 8.5, it works, but I have the following problems:

This error appears when Opera starts:

I couldn't transfer my plugins to /opt/opera850/lib/opera/plugins, which is read-only even in root. This also happens with the Firefox 1.0.6 extension.

UCI files are read-only no matter what...they're like cdroms in that respect.
One thing I've been thinking about is the possibility of creating an /opt/opera_plugins directory in user.tar.gz, with /opt/opera850/lib/opera/plugins being a symlink to this directory. In this way the main application is read-only and umount-able, and the plugins directory is writeable so you can add more to it. This could work for other uci apps' plugins, too.

Another possibility, for the sake of a cleaner /opt, could be a universal /opt/plugins directory in which apps add their plugins (/opt/plugins/firefox, /opt/plugins/opera, /opt/plugins/audacity...). Just a passing thought.

put the following in plugin options directory

/ramdisk/opt/.firefox_plugins:/opt/opera850/lib/opera/plugins

then it will use plugins that firefox uses

thanks for opera850, I am using it.
I don't undertand where to put the option.
Is it under preferences or must i edit something.

If you really want plugins to work right you'll need the motif libraries. I have built a .dsl for myself that I load. I pulled them from a Knoppix live cd. It has not been submitted to the repository because I don't think it meets the tracking requirements. The files needed are

I'm able to use the opera8.uci on even my lightest machines because it does not run the mkwriteable script (and eat my ram.)

Perhaps two versions or putting the plugins in /home/dsl/.plugins would be a better, or at least lighter weight, solution?

If your use the "get firefox flash plugin" from the DSL menu it puts it in /ramdisk/opt/.firefox_plugins . If you have the motif libraries and the plugins directory set properly then flash works. You can then add opt/.firefox_plugins to your .filetool.lst file and it will get backed up so you don't have to go get it again.

BTW Java works well too if you use the jre1_5_0.uci and then configure /ramdisk/opt/jre1_5_0/lib/i386 as the java path.
