I put together a VIA-5000 MINI-ITX computer running DSL 2.0 using a compact flash drive.  Completely silent.  This allows to the computer to stay on 24/7 and provide various services.  So I thought it would be nice to setup Skype on it and have an internet phone that is active all the time but for some reason I am not able to login.   I have setup a skype account using SuSE Linux that works from both my SuSE linux and a windows box.  But when I attemp login from the DSL box, I am able to connent but the login fails with a error code 9 (can't find that error number in skype documentation).  I am wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with this application on DSL or even running it on an ITX mobo.

I did try turning off my router firewall but this did not help.

Thanks,
David

This is an update of some things I tried, added for the purpose of documenting the issue.

I down loaded Skype on my son's DSL 1.5 Dell Latitude and was able to connect without a problem.  I placed one call but it got hung on subsequent attempts but this has nothing to do with the login problem so I will look into that later.

I also tried DSL 2.0 and DSL 2.2 Live on a AMD 2700+ EPOX mobo computer and I was also able to login into Skype.  I did not attempt to call anyone.

So at this point I am wonder if my problems might be related to the hardware platform (EPIA-5000) I am running on althought the login failure seems to be an unusual failure for platform issues.  I think the next step would be to reload my EPIA box with DSL 2.2 to see if reverting to an older kernel can help.  I do not have much confidence in that solution as DSL 2.0 works with Skype on my AMD box.

I did a little googleing and the first thing I came up with is that error code 9 is an apci error. Try booting with the dsl noapci cheat code.

doobit - Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried adding noapci to the 2.0 lilo.conf file and reboot the box.  This did not help but then I decided to try DSL 2.2 with cheats of noapci and norestore and that allowed me to connect and login.  I placed a call to my answering machine at work and got the recording so it seems one or a combination of these items did the trick.  As a side note the quality was not that great but this VIA board is there lowest end board that they sell so I would think by spending more money for a higher quality mobo you could get better quality.  I will spend some more time testing this and see what happens. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I'm glad you got it going anyway. I've got a CL6000E board that I put in a lunchbox. You can see it here: ( < http://www.louddata.com > ) I'd like to get skype going on that too.

Yes I saw your project when I was checking out different forums. That is a great idea.  I built my system out k'nex that the kids no longer play with. Guess some of us never grow up.  I really like ITX and what you can do with it.  Putting DSL on it makes even more inviting.  I am interested in how Skype works on your system so when you get around to it let us know.

How did you do the Skype install. I have downloaded the Skype .deb package but am not sure where to start.

Did you pick up the skype for myDSL from the desktop?  That is was is needed for DSL.

On the desktop click myDSL then click the Net button there you will find skype-0.93.dsl.info.  Click that and then download.  This will put a skype icon on your desk top.  Just click that to start it up.

Ok, getting farther. I got to MyDSL and NET and Download but it tells me I am not a DSL User. Do I have to register or something?

Sorry for being so lame :-(

When does it tell you this? Are you logged in as dsl or root?
Posted by Robert on Feb. 15 2006,00:09
I am logged in as root.
Posted by dtf on Feb. 15 2006,00:23
You need to be user dsl for installing myDSL extensions.  Not sure why it works that way but you will get the error you mentioned if you try and do it as root.

Ok, Thanks for the quick info. I have only ever logged in as root. what is the dsl pw?
Posted by dtf on Feb. 15 2006,01:10
I am not sure how you have your system setup but the way I did my system I do not log into my system but just startup and come in as dsl user.  I think I setup as a single user (don't remember off hand).  But I would think that if you setup as multiple users you must have setup passwords for root and dsl and any other users. However, since you are logged in as root you can try and add a dsl user and passwd.  Right click the mouse a menu will display go to systems click and then click on adduser.  Fill in dsl as user and and give it a password.

If you are planning to use DSL, a good investment is the Mike Weber's book for getting started with the basics. A link is provide on the DSL web site.  A CD is also supplied with the book covering a number of topics.

I may have set up DSL user and not even thought about it as I was concerned about root. More than likely I set DSL (if it was an option) with the same PW as root. I'll reboot and check tomorrow and repoprt back.

I have to say thanks for the speedy reponse!

Time to get the kids to bed.

You need to log in as username "dsl" in order to install MyDSL extension packages.

You will not be allowed to install them if you are logged in as user "root" or as some other user name.

Or you can try:

sudo -u dsl mydslPanel.lua

keeping in mind that the menu entries and desktop icons will be added to the "dsl" user account.

It's probably just better off to re-login as user "dsl".

I need the functionality of skype version 1.1.0.13. Is there anyway to upgrade this?
Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 29 2006,17:39
You can visit the skype website and download the skype Debian package:

then enable APT from the menu and then open a terminal and type:

sudo su
dpkg -i skype_1.2.0.18-2_i386.deb

and give it a try.

Also, you can add the sykpe Debian repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb < http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ > stable non-free

and then use apt-get install skype to do an installation.

thank you so much! I ran into some dependency issues. i tried doing the
sudo apt-get -f install
like it told me to, but i am still having tons of dependencies that i thought were included in the deb package that i downloaded. it said it had qt3 included.
also, how do i get the changes to stick even after a reboot?

Posted by cbagger01 on Mar. 30 2006,17:57
If you are installing a Debian package that has a ton of dependencies, the best way to get the changes to stick is to do a regular hd install instead of running from livecd or frugal.

You could try the "deb2dsl" utility, but chances are you would generate a huge .dsl extension that won't work due to post-install scripts, not enough RAM, etc.

I had a bunch of issues getting skype to work. I just wrote a post about it at < http://blog.sheergoodness.com/?p=17 > .

are the libs that I used to get the static QT version of skype working with DSL 2.3.

How does one submit an app into the testing repository?

In DSL Mirror there are for download:
skype-0.93.tar.gz
skype.tar.gz

I can't login using skype.tar.gz
Not login problem using skype-0.93.tar.gz, but an audio problem using the OSS driver: A strong humming noise superposed on audio output.
Then I switch to ALSA driver and the audio work fine with Skype.
The sound chipset is VIA 8235.

Anybody had the some experience using Skype?
