Hi,

I love rdesktop, it is a very great utility of DSL.

I just wonder if there is the possibility to have a server for rdesktop which could work with DSL, such as the remote desktop option which windows xp delivers?

Why? Because I also want to use rdesktop in order to monitor my DSL machine at my office from my DSL machine at home (and to be a little less win dependant).

Thanks a lot for hints!

Not quite an answer to your question: if you have the ssh daemon running on your office box then you can use the ssh command to log in. This will only give command line, but you should be able to start grahical programs if you know the name of the executable.

Thanks for the proposition.
Actually, I'd rather like rdesktop because I often work with graphical programes (and then in the long run with lots of manipulations), but again, thanks for the advice.

Linux has virtual consoles, if you press crtl+alt+F1 you should be dumped into a command line screen. X usually is on virtual screen 7 (crtl+alt+F7), but this may not be the case with DSL. I think it is possible to start another X session on e.g. console 8 - I found the following in a book on Red Hat 7.2:

startx -- :1 vt8

I would think you do this after you have logged in via ssh - I haven't tried it and I don't know if works at all, so I guess you have to experiment.

Get VNC Server from the MyDSL repository and set it up.

Then download VNCViewer for MS Windows and use it to connect to your DSL machine.  It works great.

cbagger01,
thanks for your post, but I would like to have something less slow than vnc. That's why I dream of a kind of rdesktop server.
skaos,
thanks for the tip, but it don't really work the way I want.

I discover a kind of solution in browsing the net: xrdp-02.tar.gz
The problem: I don't know if I can use it so, or instead, how to make a .dsl extension.
Could someone help me?

You are looking for a server for DSL, yes?

DSL already has the built-in ability to make OUTGOING Remote desktop connections.

If you are unhappy with the performance of VNC, you can try to connect via 8-bit (256 color) mode, or you can use TightVNC to improve performance.

Good Luck.

thanks again,

I tried xrdp-0.2.tar.gz with the mydsl-load command but without success (not enough time to try more). I red that it depends on xlib library; I hope DSL has it.

I look forward and tell you more if I can manage it.

xrdp-0.2 could be of very great use as DSL-server for remote desktop control, because it would also enables you to access to your machine with the VNC client of DSL. It is a 154 kb app and there were a new version built early in this year. A challenger of VNC?

correction: the library is libxup... (gtk2?)

anyway: more hints < http://sourceforge.net/projects/xrdp/ >

It looks like a cool project.

You will not like the results if you start an x=session in an ssh connection.

If I read this right you are looking for an equal to a MS Terminal Server. Check out this link, it is the Linux version.

< http://www.ltsp.org/ >

I have never tried it, but I have seen it work on a RedHat 7 server OK. So for DSL it is just a matter of installing all the dependancys.

Hey guys!

thanks a lot 300c_pilot for the page, I look at the app, but it is a bit too much MB and probably for me difficult to install if I have to check all dependencies in order to get it working right.

Instead, guess what: I am not careful enough! So I have downloaded the debian package of xrdp-0.2 (see the page above) and installed it in DSL 3.0RC2 with gtk2 libs loaded. The package does well install .... and I try then to load the xrdp linux-server in order to get it work, but I don't know if I succeded in it... I did a rdesktop localhost in order to check, got a black window which opens, but no screen with login and passwd request; ok, I have a bad wireless connection, don't really know how I am suppose to start the app, and have a black screen at home, so I have to check it between home and office.

More on that these next days. Thank you all of you for your help, it is very stimulating for me, and I learn a lot!

PS: xrdp-0.2 should enable me to have a light linux remote desktop server in my DSL-machine; I can then use rdesktop between my 2 DSL machines from/at home/office in order to manipulate GUI apps. It has the same function than a kind of VNC-server or a WINXP Remote Desktop utility, but it seems much better in speed, keyboard mapping qualities, screen resolution, etc. and, above all, very light.

Question for ya, have you used the Java client for the VNC. It is (I think anyway) faster?
Posted by ZoOp on June 13 2006,07:24
Hi 300c_pilot,
I have heard about it, and I know it as java plugin for a web browser, which enables you to control your desktop remotely from a web browser instead of a traditional vnc or rdp client. It could do the job, too. I don't have any experience in using it, I don't know where I can find it in order to install the plugin in firefox, but I try to check it out.
thanks a lot!

After installing the java plugin for firefox in both a windows and a DSL-machine, I get the following:

< http://IP_Addresse:5800 > (impossible to connect)

< http://IP_Addresse:5900 > (got the message RFB 003.008 at the top left in a with window of firefox)

< http://IP_Addresse:0 > (impossible to connect)

< http://IP_Addresse > (impossible to connect)

I try this with both vnc4x and vnc4x0 servers.

I have exactly same problems.
Posted by ZoOp on June 13 2006,09:48
I have no luck with xrdp:

1. the debian package installs well and creat a xrdp repository in /ramdisk/user;
2. I try to run the xrdp file as root in a shell (/ramdisk/user/xrdp/xrdp) but it says "error while loading shared library libxrdp.so;
3. libxrdp.so is in the same repository (/ramdisk/usr/xrdp/); it seems that the path of libxrdp.so is not set correctly; but I don't know where to find the script to modify (*.bin???);
4. after googeling, I found that most users of xrdp have it in /user/local/; so I move the xrdp repository to /ramdsik/user/local/; no change;
5. when I try to edit libxrdp.so, it says "permission denied; I have found no help at the moment.

Sum up: it seems to work, but I have to know how to set the path for the libraries (not only for the rdp protocol, but for the other too, as you can use then vnc client in order to access the xrdp server)

VNC plugin: the java plugin for firefox seems to work fine either for firefox or ie (in win) or for firefox only (in dsl); but accessing the vnc server with my browsers seems to hang somewhere, too.

xrdp works.... but I have another problem.

In order to make it work, I simply use grand-mother rough  methodology: just move the libraries to

/ramdisk/user/lib

and that's it.

Open a shell as root and type

/ramdisk/usr/(where your xrdp repository is/xrdp

The rdp server starts and numbered the process (= make a xrdp.pid file in ramdisk/var/run/).

The problem: when testing the server (with rdesktop localhost in a shell), I have a window which briefly pops up, and then shuts down. In the shell appears the following:

X Error: BadMatch
Request Major Code 93 ()
Error Serial §571
Current Serial §800

No idea what it is, but I maybe have to try it from home with rdesktop again.

You should try < TightVNC >

It does both server/client comms and JAVA webbrowser support...it is somewhat lighter than those other VNC servers...oh and it runs on both windows and linux!

The port issues for me are useally  to do with windows firewall.
However try running the command netstat -a on the linux box and see if it is even accepting connections.
