hi,does somebody know how to upgrade or to install another pdf viewer? For example sometimes I want to copy parts of an document and I don't know how with Xpdf. You can use the myDSL extension for Open Office. OO1.1 and higher have PDF import and export, iirc. You'll need at least 384 MB RAM to use the extension. I don't recall if abiword imports (or exports) PDF. Posted by glori on Feb. 09 2007,14:19

One more idea if Open Office doesn't import PDFs. You can use one of the online pdf:___ conversion methods (the programs it would likely take to do it on your own computer pretty much defeat the pupose of DSL). < Adobe > has an online conversion page. They also have email addresses to handle conversion; you send PDFs and get back TXT or HTML: pdf2txt@adobe.com pdf2html@adobe.com This one describes how to use your < Gmail > account to convert PDF to other formats you can work with including DOC and HTML (as well as OO/XML formats). Basically, you'll just send yourself the PDFs and then convert them in view and then save them in whichever format you prefer. < Here's > the Gmail help page with more information. Hope that helps. If you are still interested in another pdf-viewer, I have created an acroread.unc. It's Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4, so it's not the latest and greatest. It works beautifully though, and it is much better than xpdf (in my opinion at least). Being version 4, it is not that large an app either, making it perfect for older machines. The reader cannot be an official extension because of the licensing, so I have put it on my private web space. You can try it if you want. It works well for me. I downloaded the xpdf viewer Robert spoke of, the unc one.But it does not show up on the desktop. There is an xpdf, but I think it's the older one that comes with DSL 3.2? Posted by roberts on Feb. 24 2007,05:18
The xpdf.unc requires live cdrom or frugal with the default unionfs.It overlays the exising xpdf. So clicking the existing desktop icon or menu item calls the newer more capable xpdf. A new compiled for source, much smaller and a uci version of xpdf is now available in the testiing area.

epdfview requires GTK+ version 2.6.0 or higher.It won't be too long before no new GUI application will be suitable for inclusion in DSL, as developers continue to bulk up even the simplest of interfaces. Posted by sheldonisaac on Feb. 25 2007,15:20
Please excuse my lack of knowledge.I used the myDSL on the desktop to download the new .uci of xpdf, which Robert spoke of, from the testing area to the /tmp directory here. Then used the myDSL to load local file, clicked on the new .uci, clicked OK. The desktop kind of flickered. Then I clicked on the desktop xpdf icon, and its ? about still says version 1.0??
