So I ran Audacity from Aterm. That was printed to terminal screen when I tried to open MP3 file with Audacity.

Any simple explanation?

There is never a simple explanation when all you get is "segmentation fault"

The first thing I'd do is change the sample rate to something your hardware can handle...44100 is most common.

Then I'd check to see if I had libmp3lame (doesn't come with DSL or audacity.uci).  I don't think it's needed to read mp3, but it might help.
