I started looking at compiling alsa-1.0.15 for dsl-4.x

So far, a first attempt compiling only the driver for the sound card in my laptop and manually running snddevices/modprobe the drivers seems to work - i.e. sound comes out using xmms and the alsa output option.

Before I get too far along with this, has anybody already done it?

If not, my idea would be to make a two part extension - a dsl with the modules and a uci with the libs/etc which might eventually load with the alsa boot code (except that alsa-1.0.15 does not seem to have to auto module loading setup?).

Any comments ideas would be welcome...

I haven't, but I have a more grandiose plan that might duplicate/override your efforts. You might want to slow down and give it a couple days.

Is alsa4dslv2.dsl in System area helpful (working) ?
It was made for v2.1b, a 2.4.31 kernel.

(to Juanito) Not so well because it was related to updating to 2.4.36 or patching 2.4.31 for better wifi support. With that off the table and the likelihood of DSL moving to 2.6, it's really up to you. I won't do anything else with 2.4.
