Files and directories that have changed and are likely in your backup.

.jwmrc
.fluxbox/menu
.dfmext
.dfminfo
.dfmdesk/Apps/Tools/

Be sure to update these files and directories.

Hi Robert!

I've just tried the DSL 4.0rc4 out. Sad to say nothing happened when i clicked on Backgrounds in the DSLpanel. I'm running and posting this from a freshly burned cd without any changes or backups. Just thought I should notify you.

As always have fun with DSL,
meo

I'd like to know is this done with the switch limiting search to that directory, or just "ldconfig"?

Because making it search the whole filesystem would make it damn slow on old comps / slow cd-drives..

hey, a new realease, this is great, any idea when the official release is going to be?

ldconfig updates /etc/ld.so.cache. So while processing uci look for .so files and add their unique directory names to /etc/ld.so.conf and then run ldconfig. Should not create a big slowdown.

Hopefully this will be last in RC series. I am not planning anymore new features, just fix bugs as they are reported. So, probably a few weeks.

I cannot reproduce. Please provide more information. At least the output of "showbootcodes" or use Stats and Boot codes screen and type of install.

Right click on the desktop, select 'DFM for X11', check the box next to 'Desktop context menu'. To reset the right click menu right click one of the desktop icons & uncheck the 'Desktop context menu box'

I just booted up rc4 and noticed the torsmo display is missing. I copied the two torsmo files from /etc/skel and restarted just to be sure, but still no torsmo...

I have the same problem in dsl-3.4.3 also. I guess this is something to do with the move to torsmo-0.18?

Posted by Juanito on Sep. 19 2007,13:43
I did some testing on the auto-library finder for uci extensions in rc4. If we assume that Curaga's Glxgears extension has no idea where to find the libs in Mikshaw's mesa3d extension, then it seems to work well:
Code Sample
$ mydsl-load /mnt/sdb1/mydsl/mesa3d.uci
/mnt/sdb1/mydsl/mesa3d.uci sucessfully loaded!
$ mydsl-load /mnt/sdb1/mydsl/Glxprogs.tar.gz
$ glxgears
3618 frames in 5.0 seconds = 723.600 FPS
3641 frames in 5.0 seconds = 728.200 FPS
3674 frames in 5.0 seconds = 734.800 FPS
3674 frames in 5.0 seconds = 734.800 FPS
3635 frames in 5.0 seconds = 727.000 FPS

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: Brian Paul
server glx version string: 1.4 Mesa 6.5.2
..note no drm as there's no i915 module.

Interestingly, this was significantly faster than XFree86 with drm on the same machine, albeit dsl-3.4.3:
Code Sample
$ glxgears
2748 frames in 5.0 seconds = 549.600 FPS
3115 frames in 5.0 seconds = 623.000 FPS
3123 frames in 5.0 seconds = 624.600 FPS
3121 frames in 5.0 seconds = 624.200 FPS

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

Posted by curaga on Sep. 19 2007,14:15
Well, openGL/mesa updates can also bring speed :)
Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Sep. 19 2007,15:36
And remember that glxgears is not a benchmark.
It's just for verifying that your system's DRI is working properly.

But back on topic: did the loading of the extension take longer?

Any errors displayed when starting from an xterm?
Anything special about your hardware, i.e., multiple processors?

It worked fine on my 4 test machines.

Would like more feedback.

U removed the mount tool but I  cannot mount my pendrive using dfm, it says: must be superuser to mount.
I see this error hittimg ctrl+alt+F1
Also writing mount from bash I got the same error.
No problem issuing sudo mount......
I'll try booting with
base norestore
and see what happens.

OK Robert!

Last thing first. I didn't do any installation I just ran DSL 4.0 RC4 from a cd with the following boot codes: dsl noicons desktop=fluxbox xsetup . But the Background button on DSL panel didn't respond when I was up and running. Here comes the boot sequence:

ramdisk_size=100000
init=/etc/init
lang=us
apm=power-off
vga=791
initrd=minirt24.gz
nomce
noapic
quiet
BOOT_IMAGE=knoppix
BOOT_IMAGE=linux24
noicons
desktop=fluxbox
xsetup

The system stats are more than 400 lines so I won't copy those. And actually I have experienced the same as Juanito that the torsmo display is missing. Sometimes in DSL 4.0 RC4 and all the time in DSL 3.4.3.

Have fun an I hope this is of any help,
meo

Posted by roberts on Sep. 19 2007,23:01
noicons implies no dfm. no dfm no background from DSLpanel, as I previously wrote 4 subsystems try to control the background. In DSL 4 dfm is the default and is used for such purpose.
Posted by roberts on Sep. 19 2007,23:06
You should not need to be super user to mount a pendrive, unless you have a single partition and it is the one booted from. Suggest to make two partitions. A single partition also breaks the new mydsl system as the single booted partition would necessarily be owned by root. DSL 4 architecture is quite different than v3.x.
Posted by jls legalize on Sep. 19 2007,23:23
Concerning the pendrive mount problem: I was doing the test on a 2 partitions usb pendrive partitioned using the usb dsl installation.
dsl was running frugally from hd.
On a p4 I've also noticed that torsmo doesn't appear (I didn't smoke any joint). I booted dsl from a usb installation with no backup/restore.

Still getting 2 menu items for some DSL extensions. The same 2 examples. xscreensaverGTK.dsl and linpsk.dsl . These are both in the Apps area of the MyDSL brouser if you want to load them. I have them in the mydsl folder on my USB stick. Without pulling these apart I cant see whats wrong with them. They are older existing extensions however and I feel we should have some sort of backwards compatibility. These extensions dont seem to behave like this on DSL v3.4 either.
Ive made up a few of my own extensions and dont have these issues so its odd.
Click on the DSL button and go up to the MyDSL menu check it out.

Thanks Robert!

I refer to solving the problem with not getting DSL panel to function right. I also want to mention that i have the torsmo monitor in DSL 3.4.3 now. It was my own fault that it wasn't there. I had commented it out in .xinitrc by mistake. My fault, sorry!

Have fun with DSL,
meo

...from google, it seems that this might be something to do with .torsmorc and trying to divide by zero if you don't have a swap file (I don't have a swap file on this machine).

I used the same .torsmorc file in the two attempts above though...

I tried on another machine - this one running dsl-3.4.2 - mounted the dsl-3.4.3 iso and copied over the new torsmo.

This machine is running a swap file:

A small question. What is this directory all about ? /tmp/mydsl.icons
I have created some of my own desktop icons and they all work nicely. Is this the correct place to put my icon xpm files ?

It works as I say but navigating to the correct directory when setting the icons up to use this graphic is a bit long winded. A symlink between  /tmp/mydsl.icons and /usr/share/dfm/icons would be good but maybee this is fround upon.
Maybee I am way off here again ..

Very interesting about torsmo v0.18. I may have to pull it from the base and let it be an extension as andrewb had originally made. Then the .info file could be updated with actual requirements needed to get a display. I will keep watching for any more test results so we know what are the actual requirements.

This directory is loaded from all the existing mydsl extensions. Currently not used. Currently I am using a generic icon. This will change when I have a chance to update the many extensions. I was thinking to not delay 4.0 for this. Let 4.0 be released with generic icon and then work on converting icons in the extensions for 4.1. I am open to suggestions. I could keep delaying 4.0 with another RC.

Gets more interesting, if I try John's ramdisk swap thing:
Code Sample
$ torsmo

$ cd /
$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile bs=4096 count=500
dd: writing `swapfile': No space left on device
446+0 records in
445+0 records out
1822720 bytes transferred in 0.004938 seconds (369119048 bytes/sec)

Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 1818 kB
$ sudo swapon swapfile
$ torsmo
torsmo: drawing to root window
torsmo: drawing to single buffer
torsmo: forked to background, pid is 1580

I'd really like torsmo to stay in the base - maybe the extension could be used to overwrite v-0.17 or v-0.18 depending on which suits the most people

I did some more testing on the auto ld.so.conf for uci extensions on the samba.dsl extension I've been trying to move to /opt/samba-2.

The extension now finds it's libraries but when I try to mount a windows share, I get:
Quote
smb connection failed
Unknown parameter encountered: "passdb backend"
Ignoring unknown parameter "passdb backend"
load_client_codepage: filename /usr/lib/codepages/codepage.850 does not exist.
1893: tree connect failed: ERRDOD - ERRnoaccess

Symlinking /opt/samba-2/lib/codepages -> /usr/lib fixes this (and the share mounts despite the error) - recompiling from the beginning would seem to be the way to go for this one...

I could keep delaying 4.0 with another RC.

Does this mean, that we have to wait even longer for a DSL 5 release with a 2.6.x kernel ? I am a little bit disappointed.
When do you think to start with DSL 5 ?

I wish I could use DSL again, but I can't as there is no support for newer computers due to the 2.4.x kernel.
In the past, we have thought that there is no problem, but now we know, that there is no SATA support for all computers, no LAN support for all computers, ....

Why not doing a pre-pre-pre-pre release of DSL 5 ( same as DSL 4 but with a 2.6.x kernel ).
Is this really so much effort or re-programming ?

Do the new computer owners a favor please, if it could be done in an easy way. Would be great.

//

Edit:

Sorry, in no way I want to abandon the current project.
I only had / have the hope, that a version with a 2.6.x kernel could be there soon. Checking all the time, but unfortunately no news. Of course, such a message is not appropriate in this RC area. But why not estimate a time-frame for a 2.6.x release in the feedback area? I have tried a lot, but I do not get DSL 4 with the 2.4.x kernel running on my new computer.
Doesn't matter. I will be calm again and wait ..

This post is very inappropriate. It does not provide any feedback on the use of DSL 4. It contains outlandish flame bait remarks. Just because your SATA cdrom is not supported does not warrant

SATA hard drives are supported. Same goes for no LAN support for all computers.
Nor does posting of this kind provide any impetus for the developer to abandon the current project.
I would suggest not to keep reposting your current displeasure with DSL.

Thanks for fixing those DSL extensions . All good now here. I guess there might be a few more like those discovered in time.

I am currently using a tar.gz DSL extension to unpack a couple of icons (XPM's) . Maybee you will drop the use of /tmp/mydsl.icons/ in the future releases and changes.
Do you see a problem with unpacking them to /usr/share/dfm/icons/ ??

Thanks for your efforts. V4 is shaping up nicely.

/usr/share/dfm/icons would be read-only on livecd and legacy booted systems. Also, I would want to try to support 3.4.x series as well. That would suggest keeping /tmp/mydsl.icons/. The 3.4 series xtdesk supports xpm. So it is a matter of churning through all the extensions to support both 3.4 and 4.x. It is my next venture.

Regards Conky. I have no experiences and can not test alot of things with different batteries either. I just noticed some notes on torsmo being no longer maintained. It also says that conky was based on torsmo. More features. Its not so much the extra features but solving the torsmo issues that it might be good for.
This conky thing seems to have a recent build < http://conky.sourceforge.net/ >

From the source code Conky (v1.4.7) looks like it will have no problems with 'non-standard' battery names so long as it is not compiled with the flag set. It needs X11 development libraries, version 6.8.2 - the version in the repository is 4.3.0 - anyone have a more recent set available as a dsl/uci/unc?

I'll try the version in the repository (v1.3.3) on my Libretto, which looks as though it should be OK too.

Posted by Juanito on Sep. 24 2007,04:27
The xorg72 development headers are in mydsl testing - xorg72-dev.tar.gz

I see from the < torsmo readme > that:
Quote
battery  (num)  Remaining capasity in ACPI or APM battery. ACPI battery number can be given as argument (default is BAT0).

- maybe we can switch back to torsmo-0.17 and the users with weird battery numbers can modify their .torsmorc?

BTW, it looks as though the "swap file used" calculation is hard-coded into torsmo-0.18 without a check for zero values, hence the floating point exception when there is no swap file.

Thanks for the info on xorg72

The problems with v0.18 don't seem limited to the swap file issue. Running DSL in an emulator (VirtualBox on M$XP) I get the floating point exception. Torsmo can be started with a command line argument to display individual settings & it 'sometimes' works. There are obviously a quite a few problems with torsmo.

In v0.17 the only variation to the battery name that can be made is to call it BAT0 or BAT1 or BAT2,..... The Libretto (using ACPI not APM) I have calls it MBAT & so v0.17 doesn't work (v0.18 works flawlessly on that machine!).

Conky is looking a better bet as it is currently supported & developed. the version in the repository works OK with DSL in the emulator. I'll report on how it gets on with the Libretto during the next few days.

New netcardconfig? You mean this as an idea or suggestion, a feature enhancement?
Posted by andrewb on Sep. 24 2007,23:44
I have tried Conky from the repository (v1.3.3) on my Libretto & it reports the battery info the same as torsmo v0.18 (i.e. it sees the acpi battery state in the 'non-standard' directory). As a bonus the .torsmorc settings file can be renamed/copied to .conkyrc & it seems to work OK (at least for the basic settings I use). The only downside to Conky is it is twice the size of torsmo. Mikshaw packaged it as the UCI in the repository with the xft libraries which added another 90kb or so. These aren't really needed unless you want different fonts. Conky does look a better long term solution as it is actively supported (last release 30/8/07)

I'm talking about the netcardconf.lua script: in order to save the settings on reboot the /opt/eth0.sh (in my case eth0, but could be also eth1, wlan0, etc) should be added to /home/dsl/.filetool.lst
Another problem is that the lua script is a bit regressive cause it doesn't auto recognise the nameservers as the Klaus Knopper one does.

This is very minor...

The DSL home page still links to the discussion for 4.0RC3.

I forgot about that one. One that I didn't write.
Maybe best to email the author.

Ive noticed over these last few RC's that one of my laptops stalls with the floppy whiring away for up to 2 mins when it gets to creating /etc/fstab . The whole boot process hangs while this sits there sorting itself out with about 3 dots after the /etc/fstab. It only happens when I boot from floppy . I generally use fromusb frugal options. The laptop in question has a NTFS and a FAT32 partition on the HD .

Trying rc4 on Virtual Box. Frugal install on a 500mb virtual disk.
Hd formated as this; hda1 55mb, hda2 250 mb (ext3), hda3=swap
Frugal install on hda1 with Grub. When I try to point backup on hda2 and press "backup" everything hangs, the backup button is "down" and nothing works anymore.

I cannot find the netcardconf.lua menu item in the fluxbox menu.

Wouldn't be better to have the same menu items organization in fluxbox as in dfm?

Had a play with the conky uci . It seems to run almost identical to torsmo with the old torsmorc renamed as mentioned previously.
I tried it on 3 machines including 2 laptops. 1 old laptop and 1 new laptop. When running on AC the battery indicator does not seem to say anything unlike torsmo which stated "AC"
The UCI extension suffers the double up on shorcuts in the MyDsl menu. Also noticed the extra overhead with this UCI as compared to torsmo . This showed up on one laptop which only has 128Megs of ram . I just could not push as many apps out of it as I normally could. This machine runs close to the edge as it is.
I also noticed the torsmo_ip file which is used in the torsmorc file. If you change across to conky then this would be worth renaming I guess.

Is the 'optional' folder dropped ? the extensions don't appear on the menus neither in jwm nor fluxbox.

Also, do the .app files need to be saved in MyDsL (permanent storage), can't the MyDsL folder be in a ram directory and cleared on shutdown? This way there's half the no.of icons.

When not specifying the location of the mydsl folder,e.g., mydsl=xxxxx,  the mydsl folder is on /tmp (ramdisk) just like it was in 3.x

Will check out optional. I rarely use it. But can't recall that I changed anything. but that is not to say that I didn't break it. Note that optional and modules need to be under the mydsl/ directory.

I have fromhd=/dev/hdc2 mydsl=hdc1,
so how to have the .app files put in /tmp/mydsl (which is empty) instead of hdc1/mydsl ?
(what happens if hdc1 is read-only storage ?)

From what I gather, you could:
- try using swap
- revert back to 0.17
- use conky

I might be wrong about this, but it looks like the "Up: 0 k/s - Down: 0 k/s" display in torsmo doesn't work when using wireless. The changes to .torsmo_ip mean it displays the wireless ip address without problems though...

Note that I'm using torsmo-0.17 due to having no swap file so this might not be relevant to rc4 and torsmo-0.18

If I launch mplayer (the uci one) by clicking on the mydsl icon that is in the desktop, then mplayer.app there are no problems, If I launch it from the dfm menu it hangs.

Post in extensions, that one is in testing.
Perhaps the builder of that extension can help.
Perhaps a font issue? Only guessing by the appearance.

I would suggest to download the .info of the mydsl optional extension in the mydsl folder.

legalize cannabis, etc

The .info file is only available and displayed during the download process. I currently delete it when the choice to download or cancel is selected.

Are you suggesting to also save the .info file? Then for each downloaded extension you get three files.

I don't think that is has ever been available for wireless, even way back from when John decided to use torsmo.

Switching to conky may be too heavy for the lower end machines that we currently support.

Therefore from the discussion I should drop back to torsmo v0.17 and those that need special battery names use conky extension.

Could be many things. Hopefully you are not trying to backup extensions or have data greater than 250. Try running from shell and watch for errors.

Make sure you have set the backup device, look in

/opt/.backup_device

Then manually run

# filetool.sh backup

Has/Will the usb toram from vfat fix be added to this release?

Has/Will the usb toram from vfat fix be added to this release?

I am not aware of any issues in this regard.
In fact I am posting this from a toram booted usb pendrive.
Of course, depending on how you installed DSL on the pendrive, or if you have mounted MyDSL extensions then it could most certainly affect whether the pendrive remains mounted or not.

Note that DSL v4 has significantly changed the pendrive install script. This places the small DSL partition at the end of the drive and the remaining (beginnning) of the drive is for extensions and can be shared with Windows. A single vfat partiton is probamatic for two reasons, size issues on large drives, and permission issues with root owning the entire partiton becasue of vfat

No, its understandable. The problem arises when you use a vfat formatted partition to hold the embedded install (Oh, and whats the difference between embedded and frugal?). The linuxrc script copies the knoppix image over to the temporary /cdrom2, and thats where the toram fails (and I assume, to hd as well), because vfat is a case insensitive filesystem. The linuxrc script is expecting "KNOPPIX" when the file is copied over as "knoppix". The fix is adding a "mv $SOURCE/$KNOPPIX_DIR/knoppix $TARGET/$KNOPPIX_DIR/$KNOPPIX" to rename the copied KNOPPIX file. (Will post the real line, or a diff/patch file when I get home).

Just thinking about it, that might result in an error if used in a two partition (vfat,ext2) usb boot situation (since the "knoppix" file would not be found in that case), so a test to see if the file exists first would be required, so essentially, just a two/three line fix (if, then, fi)

(Just of note, I used the unzip embedded.zip -> fat32 usb drive with syslinux.exe in windows method to install DSL on the drive)

Posted by roberts on Oct. 01 2007,18:50
The case sensitivity that you talk about has already been address long ago. Not only did I boot with the latest pendrive, which has /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX on an ext2 partition with a large vfat, but also booted fine toram with an older style USB-ZIP with a single vfat containing /knoppix/knoppix.

Perhaps the linuxrc in embedded did not get updated. Truth is I don't Windows anymore, period. Or perhaps you used a linuxrc from an old boot floppy. With so many editions of DSL, and some requiring a special linuxrc that it could happen. But not with the that which is included on the cdrom images.

I will look into the embedded edition. Hopefully that is where it is.

FYI, since there does not yet exist a DSL v4.0 embedded, your findings while appreciated are really more suited to feedback on the DSL v3.4.x version.

Found the issue with linuxrc in the emdedded edition toram boot option. It only affects the embedded edition and I will be issusing a dsl-v3.4.4 soon.

Thanks for reporting.

Has anybody else noticed that the "getting started" page that opens with dillo on bootup appears to have html errors. There is a little "Bug" icon on the bottom right of the Dillo window that helps you see what the issues are with the page.

I guess most of us just close that on bootup now or have even edited the rc file to stop it opening. I just noticed it on a CD boot this morning.

Posted by roberts on Oct. 03 2007,15:42
Thanks for reminding me. I have now cleaned up my bad html coding errors and now the Dillo bug meter shows a check mark!

OK.I looked around and found one thing that I did not like; sorting the lines of /opt/bootlocal.sh, so I am going in to work on this. Will add to .filetool.sh and have defaults where possible, as requested. It will also be 3.4.4.

Posted by chaostic on Oct. 06 2007,04:36
Hey, another "bug" with 3.4.3/4. Torsmo doesn't run if noswap is used or found. Floating point error (divide by 0). Any chance for a second torsmorc file, that when noswap cheatcode is used, would replace the normal torsmorc file, or a command that would remove the swap line in the normal rc?

add2filetool, add2Xfiletool add2bootlocal are intended for drag and drop but since I have a fallback file chooser, I suppose they could/should be added to the menu(s).
