Here is our first RC for testing. There are a lot of new changes, so please test away. Robert coded most of these changes, so he will be keen to receive feedback.

Looks good, just updated my usb-pen (hd-install) from 1.5 to 2.0RC1. (using the livecd)

Up to now the only thing i noticed was that at boottime, (when mydsl's are loading) i see the list of mydsl's TWICE (first one loads at normal speed, second one goes by very fast). In the fluxbox-menu under: MYDSL i already have 4 times: update_to_gtk2!). (which is one of the mydsl's loaded at boot-time with which i have had some trouble in dsl 1.5, i managed to get it running properly by adding-> "touch /tmp/emelfm_loaded;mydsl-load /cdrom/my-dsl/gtk2-0705.dsl" and
"/usr/bin/start_gtk2" to .xinitrc. I am gonna remove those lines now to see if it will work without it in .xinitrc)

Have not noticed any changes as yet (Dillo gives me a bizarrely small window to type this in).

Using a Dell Latitude D400, I burnt a new live CD under DSL 1.5 and updated DSL on USB from 1.5 to 2.0RC1.

On booting I see the same issues as DSL 1.5:

1. After initial boot I get an error message "you passed an undefined mode number, press space to continue..."

2. On autoconfiguring devices, I get an error message "modprobe: cant locate module block-major-2"

3. My Intel 855 graphics card is not detected so I need to use VGA mode or use XFree86 to get the full resolution.

4. After dropping out of fluxbox on shutdown, I see an error message "insmod /lib/.../amp.o insmod char-major-lo-134 failed"

I also see my optional myDSL apps listed twice.

Other than that the Broadcom wireless LAN and ALPS touchpad are not detected as in DSL 1.5.

I'll continue to play around and post anything new I see.

Couple of things off the top of my head that need to be specificly tested by the userbase.

1. USB 2.0 support with the install to usb pendrive scripts
2. play with the irc:// and mailto: stuff in firefox
3. test LOTS of extensions! Update the ones that need to be updated! MyDSL extensions are provided by the community! It's up to you guys to keep them up to date!

Juanito,

1, 3, and probably 4 are caused by Intel graphics chipsets generally sucking in anything other than Winsuck.

block-major-2 is the floppy drive module.

modprobe b44 will get your nic working, and the ALPS touchpad driver is quite large, and needs Xfree86 anyway.

Some of the new files that may be overwritten by your existing backups. To be sure to have the new files do the following:

cp /etc/skel/.fluxbox/menu /home/dsl/.fluxbox/.
cp /etc/skel/.fluxbox/init /home/dsl/.fluxbox/.
cp -r /etc/skel/.xtdesktop /home/dsl/.
cp /etc/skel/.xfiletool.lst /home/dsl/.

Note: this is for going from 1.5 to 2.0
From earlier versions you will have to find my posts describing such files.

Dropped bsflite? C'mon!

That's one of the big pulls for me. I had heck in a handbasket with GAIM. I'm running a P90 with 32 megs of RAM and I only wish that there was a version of bsflite available for MSN too.

I guess I'm big on the text-tools when it's practical.

Did anyone look into the weird bug in Dillo where the CTRL-L to open a "goto url" window no longer works?

It's broken both in the hotkey and as a menu item in dsl-1.5

By the way, since the kernel is being updated, are any of the modules-as-extensions going to have to be rebuilt? Its a minor kernel rev, but it might be worth checking into before going live.

Since you are planning on no longer being on the 2.4.26 kernel, what out of date version of knoppix do I need to download to develop applications?

Two things I have to say:

1. NetHack finally works!
2. When I use my Lucent Winmodem (Stratitec IC56A, DSP1648c chipset), it dials with wvdial, but I can't get online.

We are not the authors of Dillo so don't post problems about Dillo here.

The purpose of this area. It is not for Ideas and Suggestions
If you are going to report a bug within the base DSL then be sure that I can reproduce it by including the following during your boot up.

dsl norestore base

I have already address the fact that extensions with modules will need to be rebuilt. Sources will be forthcomming...

We are just testing this process to include users at this level.

I was glad to see the addition of the LT winmodem support. I tested on an old compaq presario 5304 desktop, and everything seems to be working fine. Although, when I tested on my compaq presario 1610 laptop, the modem was not found?? I have had the internal modems working in both these computers with DSL 1.5 and precompiled drivers I found for the 2.4.26 kernel. Any idea why the laptop modem isn't detected?

guest, I am looking at the result lspci to autodetect the winmodem.
You can check by looking at DSLpanel->System->Stats->PCI
and look for Lucent. If not try looking in Hardware tab and see if is there. Finally look in Modules tab. If not there you can try manually insmod ltmodem and insmod ltserial and then use /dev/ttyS14 as the modem device.

Dillo still can't cope with extended characters -- that is, all common Western European accents and currency symbols (neither euro nor pound show up, and the following characters get truncated. This did not happen in Dillo in pre-1.5 versions of DSL).

Can an updated version of neofb.o be included. There is one (v0.4 I think) that has more options - in particular one for the libretto screen.

Great to see Firefox has been updated - now all that's needed is for the Mozilla team to fix the bug in Firefox so that different themes can be installed!

Are there any other Mixer controls that could be used which will cope with 'multiple /dev/mixer'? My Libretto has seems to use both /dev/mixer0 & /dev/mixer1. To be able to control all channels I need to open a second instance of wmix using "wmix -m /dev/mixer1" to get at the master volume, bass, & treble amongst others

But this is probably not a DSL 2.0RC1 issue

I notice that the initial boot from a USB 2.0 device goes very quickly but then copying the kernal to ramdisk seems to take the same time as a USB 1.1 device. Is there any way to check if DSL 2.0 is using USB 2.0 for this?

I tried using Netcardconfig from the DSL Control Panel and noticed the first screen appears to be in German:
eth0 Netzwerkkarte_0
wlan0 Netzwerkkarte_wlan0

Not a big deal I guess...

I also tried the PCMCIA tool from the DSL Control Panel but it only shows blank screens, even when there is a card in one of the slots - maybe this is because the PCMCIA controller is not recognised?

Roberts, Thank you for the lt winmodem help. I got the tainted kernel warning, but the modem worked fine. Just curious, I noticed that starting in and early version of DSL (I think 1.2 or so, don't remember) whenever I start a ppp conection, a second wmnet opens above the first one already in the slit. Any ideas?

I had the same thing due to home/dsl/.mozilla in my backup,
in a stroke of genius, I blew my previous backup away, and
had to start again.

This was a known trick in earlier versions, was corrected by 1.5.

adraker, thanks ... I try to keep my backup. BTW, I got an idea from your post. I checked in /etc/skel/.mozilla and found that it's empty. Then, I deleted all files and /firefox in /home/dsl/.mozilla and shutdown restart. After re-boot, I try to run Firefox again. Now, it works. When I re-checked in /home/dsl/.mozilla, I found /firefox and appreg.
Maybe that directory was re-generated by Firefox or DSL.

Ok, I don't know how small centericq could be stripped down. It is 3.5MB stripped. Maybe with a few obscure protocols and RSS/LJ dropped...

Been using DSL v1.4 for a while here with a custom remaster at our workplace. Everybody on the IT response team seems highly impressed with the polish. I even made a custom background and html-splash page for display upon reaching desktop.

You guys (and gals?) rock!

In my custom remaster I have installed gFTP since we can't view our network folders using AxY FTP. However, gFTP seems to choke/break on files/folders that are VERY large (like some of the Outlook.pst files we occasionally rescue from dead W2K systems we suport). So I installed the FireFTP extension to Firefox and generally use that instead.

Any chance ( I know space is really limited for you DSL zenmasters ):;): of considering adding FireFTP as part of the "standard" DSL feature build in Firefox?

Nice to have a backup GUI FTP app for the non-command-line folk out there.

I really appreciate all your hard work!

Didn't realize it was a wlan thing. Broadcom wlan is only supported with ndiswrapper, due to Broadcom being generally sucky anyway.

You have no idea how often that centericq is suggested, but the fact is, less than 1/10 the size of centericq, and supports the most common protocals (AIM and irc).

Siince we are not Knoppix based with this kernel, I have now posted the modules that were compiled but not included in the base iso.

modules-2.4.31.tgz is now posted in the release candidate section

This may prove useful to only the more advanced users. They are not needed in the base iso.

They are being provided only for the sake of completenesss.

MethodOne: I had the same problem with my 1610. I reinstalled, but when the screen flashed to reboot, I immediatedly powered it down. I then started the computer and it worked fine. I did find that the grub install worked fine if you wanted to try that instead.

I'm getting Juanito's errors

1 and 3 with that pesky "you passed an undefined mode number, press space to continue..." error has always been received by me on any Dell puter in my school which subsequently affects the graphics. I have tried almost ever suggestion I have found reqarding this but still have not succeeded. We still have a way to go before this is compatible with most puters sadly. Any other suggestion. I'll be the next one to buy a DSL TSHIRT IF I can get rid of this damn error...

GRUB works with my Compaq and its Winmodem even works! I still can't get the Stratitec modem that I bought at Wal-Mart to connect with the live CD after redoing my backup file.

Other ways to strip things down too. Get rid of many of the neat interface and history bits added recently. And of course that 2.1M includes ICQ as well as AIM and IRC.

I do not know if this is new stuff or not but...

In the "Control Panel" DHCP client doesn't toggle on and off correctly. I toggled it off and then had to restart to get it working again. I'm not sure that "up" and "down" on the button work correctly, either.

Whenever I try to use apt-get, it requires using the -o=APT::Force-LoopBreak option because of updating e2fsprogs. Can this be updated in the base?

The superuser prompt changed in 1.5 and 2.0RC1. Can we change it back to the working directory and cyan rather than bash-2.05b#?

The big module dependant dsl file I know of is alsa.debs. Any chance of updating this? I tried using gcc to compile the one from < http://www.alsa-project.org/ > but I could not do it. Even after I loaded the 2.4.31 kernel from kernel.org it still could not find version.h (neither could I).

I like the elephant background better. Not a big deal, though.

Something is wrong with nICQ, already included in DSL?

nAIM does aim, irc, and icq in just under 360k. Best deal I've seen for the features you get in that package, and now that nAIM is using TOC2, all is good in the world again.

I think Feather does not use the same way of detecting framebuffer size that DSL does. They are also quite a bit larger than DSL, so they can afford the space to use fancier screen-drawing methods.

One thing about Intel graphics, though. They're still better than NeoMagic cards. Except for the i_830 chipsets. Those are spawned by Satan.

Hmph. That's a little out of context. I *was* pointing out the other protocols were the big benefit of centericq (as well as the UI of course).

But of course, as mentioned, I'd just as soon drop all IM. No point in a client that only lets me sign on a couple of protocols. I much rather launch a web client or run it from home.
icq, yahoo, msn, aim, irc, jab and lj is what I am currently signed on in centericq.
As well as the odd RSS feed or two.

Hardly worth discussing. DSL has so many packages I like I can hardly begrudge other people their favourites. Especially now that one can consider BBC linux dead n buried.

Pity I'm down to my last credit card sized CD

DSL is just too dang popular. Someone always asks for it when I whip it out.

Time to find a mini CD distro I 'spose. I've got plenty of those left.

Hi,

I'm working DSL with the instalation of the TripleBoot in a USB pen, and with the protect
mode for the backup. So I can use DSL at home and at work.
Is very comfortable, because to update to a new version I have only to substitute the
DSL.iso in the qemu directory.

With the new 2.0rc1 version I have in the startup a lot of errors concern to the modprobe
of the 2.4.24 kernel version, and after introducing the password for the desencriptation
don't restore the backup.des with new errors of the same type.
If I install another time the 1.5 version there is no problem.

I think that the problem is the minirt24 of the base directory of the tripleboot form, it
is for the 2.4.24 kernel version and not for the 2.4.31 version.

Roberts, It's posible to make a minirt24 version of the new relase for the tripleboot??

For me is very useful DSL in this form and I want to work with the new relase and the
next comming relases

No problems or complaints so far, after a brief browse through.

The LT modem auto-detect is beautiful. I just ran ppp setup and choose /dev/modem, and then i could use basically the same ip-up script I had before. The only difference from what i have on other systems is the location of resolv.conf.

The system stats tool is great, a very good idea. The only thing I would suggest at this time is the possibility of making it resizeable (and maybe be able to change that big ugly font =o)). It's kinda large even on 1024x768...i'd hate to have it running like that on a smaller resolution.

Those first two are big enough additions that even if there was absolutely no other changes I would definitely want to upgrade.

Floppy tool is another good one. I won't have a lot use for it myself, but i'm sure i'm in the minority. It looks good and will be useful for many people.

The backgrounds tool is getting better. That's one of those things i find fun to play with....it's not a vital tool, but a pleasant toy. I'm thinking about throwing in some more widgets myself at some point, just for giggles.

EDIT: Oh yeah...the additional 48 cloops are AWESOME! I don't think i will ever be making another tar.gz extension =o)

Kernel sources and dsl.config file are now posted in the release candidate area.
This should allow the creation of compatible modules for use with DSL 2.0.

The real problem with my modem is that it dials, but it can't load any pages when I use the mydsl cheatcode.

Edit: When I load my extensions or restore using the cheatcodes, I can dial, but not surf.

FYI,

The new LT MODEM autodetection sometimes will find a Lucent modem when one does not exist.

This is because the autodetector considers all cards made by Lucent's vendor ID to be winmodems (lspci -vn | grep 11c1: )

However, Lucent also makes other kinds of cards like my FireWire adapter, and these other cards can trigger false hits for the autodetector.

A quick visit to the Linux PCI ID Repository shows the Lucent cards:

As you can see, all of the modem card IDs start with "04", so a check for "11c1:04" instead of just "11c1:" will eliminate the false hits but still correctly detect the real winmodem cards.

FYI,

alsa ".o" driver modules are compiled for a specific kernel version, so the alsadebs.dsl extension will not work with 2.0rc1

The alsa deb packages were taken from KNOPPIX 3.4 with very little tweaking on my part.

Unfortunately, KNOPPIX is now exclusively based on the 2.6 kernel so I can't just steal them from a newer version of KNOPPIX.

It might be possible to get them from a Debian branch (experimental?), but otherwise a recompile from source and then repackaging the files with the autodetection scripts will need to be done from scratch, and at the moment I am not ready to take on a task with this level of involvement.

MS TrueType Corefonts stopped working in 2.0RC1

Just starting to experiment with 2.0RC1 and the first thing I noticed is that MS TrueType Corefonts stopped working in 2.0RC1

Back on 1.4 and 1.5, with great assistance from the forum, I was able to get MSTrueType Core Fonts up and working.

works fine, but the intalation of hsp modem "last chance III" was with the added problem of no presence of modversion.h in the new modules...�where are? . I download the modules and the source but i d�nt see...

the next experience is to return to work the zaapa wlan usb in the new kernel , task for monday (in Spain).

I don't think this is specific to the RC, but I noticed it when testing.

Why does running DSL live on a system that has DSL frugal installed default to using the installed /opt and /home? Seems to me that the safe thing is to not use it in case the new version trashes X or desktop settings. A few people have questioned why their Firefox wouldn't work testing the RC. There's all kinds of potential problems with mixing versions. If someone wants to use their existing /home, they should supply it on the boot line. Otherwise DSL Live should default to running as if it's on a clean system, instead of requiring specification of the "norestore" option to force that.

It DOES use the installed /opt and /home. If you have a backup available, it will copy those files automatically, and it should be up to the user to prevent this from happening when testing. If you are upgrading you should always make an extra backup in case things go wrong...this is the situation in any system. The way I look at it it is easier to use the "nobackup" and "base" options for testing new versions than it would be to have to specify a backup and mydsl dir every other time.

Using the USB boot parameters apm=off & acpi=force does not result in the ACPI modules being loaded at boot. After manually loading the modules battery, button, fan, processor, thermal & ac the ACPI stuff seems to work - are these meant to load automatically in DSL 2.0?

I can see the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file has a lot more detail in it than the same file in DSL 1.5 but I still cannot edit it as /root or using /etc/init.d/mkwriteable, is this meant to be the case?

Also from boot messages after loading Card Manager, I noticed DSL 1.5 can see my Texas Instruments smartcard reader but does not recognise it. DSL 2.0 does not see it at all.

When you load the same dsl (say barrage.dsl) twice using emelfm and "mydsl" you get multiple dsl menu entries. This didn't happen in 1.4

The command prompt changed for root. Did we want it changed or did it work better before with the username and path? I like the old way better.

I don't like the single click icons, but it's not a democracy and I understand that.

Aside from that, thanks for the bcm5700 network driver, the additional cloops, and especially for the kernel and config file.

The alsa deb packages were taken from KNOPPIX 3.4 with very little tweaking on my part.

cbagger, I took this on and submitted a dsl to extensions. �The kernel sources and config file that John put out there for RC2.0 make creating modules so much easier than it was before. �It's a great thing to have the whole thing there for when you need it.

Does xmms work for playing a CD for anyone else in 2.0? I tried but it would not work. I booted dsl toram, and then chose Xmms Play Cd from the menu. I chose /dev/cdrom for the location. Has anyone else tried to play an audio CD? MP3s work fine for me.

I tried DSL2.0-RC1 Embedded but my mainboard is not recognized correctly. My mainboard is MSI 845E Max (MS-6566E v1.X) ATX based on Intel 845E & ICH4 chipset (designed for Pentium4). I see "Pentium II (Klamath) 1570 Mhz 128 mb".
Programs seems to work well.
DSL-0.9.3 Embedded's hardware recognization is correct.

DSL embedded uses a "virtual computer" that runs in software via a program called QEMU.

This "fake computer" is built to be a Pentium 2, so you will see the "Pentium 2" message upon bootup when running embedded on any PC regardless of the PC's REAL CPU name.

Same thing happens here. I thought it was my fluxbox extension, but switching back to the default didn't help. I followed the process as close as I could, and what i see is that /tmp/menu.tmp is being properly built but is not being copied to /home/dsl/.fluxbox/

Ref Mikshaw's comment - the myDSL menu does not appear booting from USB either.

I found that the file .mydsl_dir contained the line "/mnt/sdb1", changing it to "/mnt/sda1" did not bring the myDSL menu back on reboot.

.mydsl_dir is for storage of myDSL downloads...it won't affect the menu at all. As far as I can tell there may be a problem with mkmydslmenu.lua. It writes the temp menu and seems to quit there without an error message...i can't see any logical reason why rename() would fail on anything but ramdisk though.

I just tried the DSL RC and it is working perfectly with my new computer.
My sound card and my ethernet card (Some NVIDIA NForce ethernet card using forcedeth driver and an AC97 sound card) weren't working in the last versions, but they now work perfectly with the new RC! :laugh:

Two small "problems" I found are that xmms won't use the normal theme when opening an mp3 from emelfm and the sound is really buggy and laggy in flash animations in firefox, it may be my sound card, dunno.

Other than that, DSL is now perfect for my uses. :laugh:

great work in the las relaease I have an old notebook and I need a full OS to work with. My problem is that in the last relase my wireless pcmcia card is not supported (my card is the dwl-650+ ). I tried to get pcmcia-cs 3.2.8 to work but I couldnt. Can somebody tell my if this version support my wireless card?
That's the only thing that's getting in the way of using this great distro.

Yes, it is automatic, if you have swap setup.
This is friedgold's contributed hack. You can search the forums to see his original post. It has been wokring great, allowing low ram machines to load large extensions.

mikshaw, you are right on. It does appear that lua's rename() function is not honoring the bind redirect, thus no mydsl menu when using persistent home.. I will write a work around for RC2.

I just downloaded DSL and found out that the version of ndiswrapper is 1.1. That means that I cannot get my notebook (ASUS A2500N with Sis162u chips) working. For the Sis162u chips version 1.4 of ndiswrapper is necessary.

I can use Troppix for activating WiFi, but Troppix cannot be installed on your hard disk.

Therefore I suggest: update ndiswrapper to version 1.4!!

Could the Broadcom 5700 module (ref bcm5700.tar.gz) be included with DSL 2.0 since the Intel 855 graphics chipset is so common now in laptops?

This would avoid all the messing about with XFree86.

Considering that DSL does not inlude any graphics drivers at all currently, nor does it include a X server than can use X modules, there is really no reason to include a graphics module.

Xvesa and Xfbdev are monolithic X servers, configured entirely at run time with runtime parameters.

The problem with the i855 chipset is that it does not properly support VESA graphics modes besides 640x480x16

This is Intel's fault and not DSL or the XVesa developers.

Intel appears to have fixed this problem in their i915 chipsets because they work fine with DSL Xvesa video.

In theory, it should be possible to compile an Xi810 TinyX server that could be provided by myDSL with little or no configuration.

However, neither myself nor John have been able to get this server to compile properly.

If you want to have a go at it, visit the freedesktop.org site and grab the source code.

Ignore my ignorance, but why can't we use binaries for tinyx from www.xfree86.org? I don't have a laptop or the card in question, but they do have binaries for our level of glib (2.0 from sudo dpkg -l | grep glib if I didn't do that wrong). The package I looked at was < Xtinyx.tgz >. It contained a larger Xfbdev and Xvesa than we use in dsl, but also had an Xi810 binary (about 800K). Too big to be in the base dsl (?) but maybe it could be done as a remaster? Is is possible to restart the xserver using a modified startx script to load the Xi810 server instead of Xvesa??? How much of the XFree86 stuff would need to change?

I have never gotten the binaries to work without getting segmentation faults or PAM errors.

Maybe something has changed and the latest ones now work with DSL. The only way to know for sure is to try them.

FYI, there is no guarantee that the Xi810 server will work fine with the Intel i845/855 chipset.

Since I was never able to test this server with the chipsets in question, the answer is unknown by me.

You don't need to modify startx. Instead, all you need to do is modify your /home/dsl/.xserverrc file and replace the "Xvesa" with "Xi810" or instead the full part to your Xi810 file. For example /home/dsl/myservers/Xi810

Can we change the file /usr/local/share/siag/siag/external.load so that it uses wget (which we have) instead of httpget (which we don't)?

change the lines:

PPPoE routine in DSLPanel doesn't set default gateway correctly.

It sets default gateway to modem, when it should be to ppp0 address recently got.

Since the wishlist is growing:

Can the kernel be recompiled with the SATA support turned ON?

It would be nice if at least the standard AHCI controller could be compiled in, and the others at least compiled in as a "m" module support at a minimum.

SATA support is an often requested feature to be added to a future version of DSL and kernel version 2.4.31 allows us to have this support.

I am testing this RC1 on many systems.
First failure is : (boots ok, but cant find Net chip
Asus , A7V600 , K7 XP athlon , 512mb, 200gb-hdd + Radeon 9600,
the on board Net chip is , 3com 3C940 1giglan. (not broadcom)
boots but cant find card , so says system + NET, netconfig, proc.

Looks like the only weak spot ( for connectivity) is NIC Lan chips.
baseline:all systems stable under Linux 10.0 RC1.

My test experience:
simple test, boot, click Firefox, and browse web with no problems. ( assumes good dhcp server, on each subnet)

I'm testing DSL-2.0 with a laptop: ACER Aspire 3003NLCi, AMD Sempron 3000+ 1800MHz. I got this message:-

you may have got this message because your laptop uses the ACPI power management standard which supercedes APM.

Use the boot parameters apm=off acpi=force
then modprobe ac, battery, button, fan, processor & thermal

If you don't get any errors then your laptop probably uses ACPI, the wmacpi dockapp will work to monitor battery life and you can manually echo power saving settings to /proc/acpi/processor/CPU0/performance etc

I had thought I was seeing a pattern of monthly releases.
I use DSL in my toolbag as one of many rescue utilities. I have installed it on a laptop for full-time use in the past, but switched to Knoppix and then Mepis. I now keep DSL on a thumbdrive and recommend it to users with low-power systems. I like how well DSL works on such a broad range of systems.

2.0rc1 seems to have fixed the problem of booting on my hp ze4560us lappy. With earlier versions I needed to use the bootcode 'acpi=off', but now it seems to boot fine. I had some problems going to 2.0rc1 on my IBM lappy, although that is probably my own user error. So I will wait for 2.0 to try again.

I'm testing DSL-2.0RC1 and Knoppix 3.4 on Laptop: ACER Aspire 3003NLCi, AMD Sempron 3000+ 1800MHz

Both use INIT: version 2.78-knoppix-booting. I got 2 different things below on booting.

DSL-2.0RC1:-
Autoconfiguraing devices... XXX modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-2
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-2
Done.

Knoppix 3.4:-
ACPI Bios found, activating modules: ac battery button fan processor thermal
Autoconfiguraing devices... XXX Done.

I would like to see the meesage like Knoppix 3.4 in DSL-2.0RC2.

I am running RC2.0RC1 on a dell inspiron 3000.. the old p233 with 272mb of ram. proving that if you throw enough ram at anything it will work albeit slowly.. untill I found DSL I have followed you through the itterations and this seems to be the best one yet.. I love the package of open office 2.0 that has been added under testing.. Thanks for the excellent update.. hope more people keep using your fantastic efforts and software.. will be adding to your collection soon.

is it possible for you guys to post an md5sum.txt file for the iso and the other related files. so that we could ensure that the download is accurate and that the md5sum matches the one posted.

it will save tons efforts to get a specific ISO troubleshooted just to find that the downloaded ISO is corrupted.

Hi!
I've just tried the 2.0RC1.
I want to use it to get online on a 233Mhz/32Mb ram Computer. So i'm testing with mem=32m on my 1.1 Ghz duron.
1 small problem: the numlock led is always off, even if the num-pad is active(type numbers from it)
2 improvements:
1: I use a pppoe connection. I could connect to the internet only after giving the command:
route add default ppp0
(the connection is detected fine, the ip's are being retrived...., i just must add the route)
2. the swap file creation: at least on my computer, it wanted to create it only ig the fat(32) partition was unmounted(Appeared a "Sorry no dos partions found..." with it mounted as root or normal user), then it complained that the partition isn't mounted and closed, without enableing the swapfile.
I had to mount the partition, and give: swapon /dev/hda3/knoppix.swp to use it.
A, is there a way to use some yahoo messanger client?, i could only find icq, irq and such

Not sure if this has been reported but with 2.0rc1 it seems both my Linksys PCMCIA WPC-11 rev 3 wireless NIC card and my D-Link DWL-122G are not working. It does get detected at boot but I cant configure them for net access.

These two cards work perfectly with 1.5

I got an error message when I used K3b: DCOP communications error (K3b)

Could not read network connection list.

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!

BTW. I can use K3b on my PC but cannot use in my ACER laptop. It got the other 2 error messages:-

Could not find mime type
application/octal-stream

Could not start process Unknown protocol 'file'..

I am using a micro mother board running DSL from a frugal install on a 512MB CF card. The new 2.0 does not recognize my NIC. It's a Realtek RTL-8139. (This same hardware worked fine under 1.2 -> 1.5). When I run NetCardConfig from the control panel, it responds with "No supported network cards found". On boot up, I don't see the usual "Found ETH0, backgrounding DHCP request" type message.

Probably the biggest reason to have a public beta test is because John and I do no have access to every type of hardware to test on.
All I can say is that this kernel and modules was built using the knoppix .config file.

So when reporting problems with unsupported cards etc, that worked in 1.5 and earlier please try to say which module(s) worked in the past.

Use system stats modules tab or type the command lsmod
Then look for the module in /lib/modules/2.4.31 directory
If the module(s) is there try insmod command. Some modules may not be there in which case the kernel sources are available to create your custom module. Then use the boot option modules=hdaX which will insmod extra custom modules.

Let us know what you find.

2 things:

The madwifi drivers are not there anymore. I was hoping for a new version so it would recognize my card (D-Link DWL-650, rev.B5, Atheros based). I was hoping to avoid having to try to compile, since I'm not very linux-savvy...

Also, is there any way to dual-boot with 2 versions of DSL with grub in a frugal install? I tried but even though I specified the partition with the root (hd0,3) command and boot option root=/dev/hda4, it would invariably find the /dev/hda3 partition first and take this one instead.

I have intel 536 pci internal software modem(widely use by dell) and DSL does detect whe I run 'lspci' but dialup config does't show any link to the nodem. Same with USR 5610B internal modem. The 'lsmod' shows no driver loaded. Anybody knows how to make this work.?

can you add driver for Intel 536 or 537ep internal modem , better USR 5610B pci internal modem with DSL 2.0 final. RC1 does't load drivers when it detect the modem.

You need to have a boot option of fromhd=/dev/hda4 to make this work. Knoppix wants to boot the first KNOPPIX image it sees so the fromhd command will point it to where you want to boot.

I havent gotten DSL to work in other resolutions only the 640x480 Res on this machine but it works good, (although old) this is a color screen laptop and the DSL desktop looks great on here.

With a 28.8 Motorola @World ext hardware dial up modem
and Toshiba CD-Rom XM-1202B / CD Drive.

The 28.8 Motorola @World ext hardware modem works great in DSL, see's it right away and gets to work dialing out after the config.

The Toshiba CD-Rom XM-1202B / CD Drive <-- doesnt work with DSL and was always known to be a pain as it even required its "own" Toshiba supplied driver to use it in DOS so no surpise it isnt seen by DSL.. The modem and surfing the web in Dillo works great, FireFox is bit hardware intensive and so its slow, but Opera works quite well and at a tolerable speed. (meaning less swapping)

DSL-2.0RC1 works just as good on here as 1.2 thru 1.5 did.

In fact maybe its just me but 2.0RC1 seems a little faster.. (the kernel update maybe?)

It doesn't directly support 64 bit architecture. You can get started by reading the wiki and the FAQ. You can make a USB key that will boot from SOME computers that support booting from the USB key drive. Many older ones don't. Almost all computers support booting from the CDROM drive, if they have one, but you often need to set it up in the computer's BIOS.

I know that SaidinUnleashed mentioned at the start of the thread the big things that need testing for this RC. Can somebody put out a set of basic instructions of how to test the thiing that have changed. I'm not looking for anything like formal test scripts, but a little direction would be nice.

I have access to an array of old and new hardware between work and home, but I'm not sure how to test, other than poking around randomly until something doesn't work (nothing so far!). I feel like this is inefficient, since I'm probably not using some things that are importatnt to a significant portion of the users. I'd like to make the best use of the time and hardware I have available for DSL, especially as I am quickly moving towards using it as my main desktop OS.
