Version 4.4.6 is now posted:

dsl-4.4.6.iso
dsl-4.4.6-syslinux.iso
dsl-4.4.6-vmx.zip
dsl-4.4.6-initrd.iso
dsl-4.4.6-embedded.zip

A minor release to merge dsl v3.x icon manager into 4.x, the most often requested change. JWM + DFM is still the default but now you can use the new boot code "classic" to get both fluxbox + xtdesk as used in dsl v3.x, e.g.,

boot: dsl classic

Or if you prefer JWM + xtdesk then simply use the boot code icons=xtdesk
Or any combinaton of desktops fluxbox or jwm and icons of dfm or xtdesk

Files likely in your backup that have changed and are needed for 4.4.6 to work correctly:

.xinitrc
.fluxbox.inc
.murgaluarc

Robert, can you clarify what it means when you say the following files ...
.xinitrc
.fluxbox.inc
.murgaluarc

may be affected in your backup file.

Is it correct to assume that these changed files can be extracted from the iso image or zip file and simply copied over the existing ones in 4.4.5. and presto we have 4.4.6?

Edit: never mind I realized this was a stupid question.

The classic bootcode and variants is a great idea.

I have a file opened with beaver that is on sda2, then I umount the sda2 partition, and it gets unmounted even I have this file open

legalize cannabis, coke...

File is not truely left open while editing. It was read into buffer of said editor. Typically a file is opened for reading then closed. File is later opened for writing then closed.  This is true for nano and vi as well. And this is not unique to 4.4.6. If you wish not to allow yourself to unmount while editing then best to navigate (cd) to said device.

is there a difference between the new bootcode and using
Code Sample
desktop=fluxbox

or does it just add the icons?

i prefer to use fluxbox and rox so i added the "noicons" cheat.

Posted by roberts on Sep. 22 2008,04:23
No change to desktop options. You can still use desktop=fluxbox
The boot option of "noicons" also has not been changed and still works as before.

What is new is the option to specify icons=xtdesk and the new boot option of "classic". Using classic is only a shortcut for desktop=fluxbox icons=xtdesk

Using icons=xtdesk is not only the larger single click icons but also the mount tool via the "docked" program and fluxter the pager, i.e., the desktop as presented in 3.x.

Then there must be more files in my backup that prevents what I'm trying. I want to restore the good ole' 3x look and I've replaced the three files mentioned in this threads first post. However, whatever combinations of cheatcodes and whatever I try, this is where I'm at:
I've got fluxbox and fluxter the pager OK, but whatever I try icons stays dfm and no xtdesk. And wmswallow presents a white rectangle with no mounttool or anything inside.

However, when I boot with the "norestore" option all work as intended AFAIK... So obviously more files in my backup should be replaced/modified. I don't really want to start from scratch as that backup.tar.gz contains numerous costumizations I've added over time and all else works OK. So I'll rather localize and fix the actual problem(s)... Any clues anybody?

It is your .desktop file comming from your backup that is messing you up. The .desktop file contains the desktop window manager and choice of icon manager. You can edit this file or choose not to include it in your backup.

the server_root in /opt/monkey/conf/monkey.conf is still set to
/opt/monkey-0.9.1/htdocs  rather than 0.9.2 or just use the link "monkey" so the webserver wont start.

Looks fine here.  Perhaps you have an old leftover version?

Posted by stunix*com on Sep. 25 2008,09:32
as i trust you guys rather than trusting my own judgment, i rechecked everything, and after removing the monkey.conf from my filetool.lst and rebooting it does indeed give me a fresh conf file with the incorrect server root defined.
incidentally this is a fresh install and apart from ftp'ing rox, everything else is new.

however I have found that I was running 4.4.5 - sorry.

I tried looking for a changelog entry for it, but I can't find it.  Maybe it slipped past the notes.

That took care of some of it. Still there is a small cosmetic glitch. When I start up the wmswallow thing is just a white rectangle. Using the restart windowsmanager function in the menu makes the mountool now appear in that rectangle, however that also moves fluxter the pager to the upper left corner. So now I have to kill and start fluxter again and then it's all hunky dory....

I do not have this issue, but I remember it from 3.x days. It is a timing issue. You can likely adjust it for your hardware by adding a sleep command. The file that calls wmswallow in 4.x is .fluxbox.inc

I tried playing around with sleep and such, but it didn't help much... However, this is hardly the biggest issue....    ;)

Posted by roberts on Sep. 30 2008,02:57
Typically adding sleep 2 as the last line of .fluxbox.inc should be helpful. If you haven't tried it as the last line, then might try that,
Posted by RRRR on Sep. 30 2008,04:03
I had tried sleep everywhere but the last line. I tried adding sleep 4 there now. However, what I see now is that the docked app first pops up in the upper left corner with the mountool visibly inside. Then it jumps down to the lower right corner, and whites out... If I now use windowmanager > restart then the mountool reappear in the wmswallow rectangle but now fluxter at the same time jumps from the lower left to the upper left corner. Well, killing and starting fluxter again fixes that...

Dillo 2.0 is now available.  Maybe it can be added to DSL at a later date.

the dos swap file menu voice under setup should call the lua window instead the bash one.
Actually I think that the old one was more user friendly

i get the same issues with mount.app, but i find that when its whited out, i can just open the fluxbox menu on top of it and it refreshes.  no need to restart x.

Let me see if I have room for native dockable mount app, by dropping wmswallow
