DSL is still a sub 50MB distribution, but now, thanks to the hard work of Robert Shingledecker and help from members of this forum, there is now an amazing ability to stack extensions to the existing iso and easily get DSL++ without having to go through the work of remasterring.  This system is also very versatile as the extension media can be on the same disk or in another space, such as a separate hard drive partition.  There is also a very easy to use mkmydsl script which will assist you in building your own DSL++ iso which will have exactly what you want and be the size you want.

Quick Q John

Downloading the v0.7 iso now (for when my exams are over and then i can play with my built miniPC :;):  )

Do I need to download all those other 'link' files, eg openoffice form the ftp sites, or is there a script in DSL?

Wow, I'm so excited I could vomit with anticipation...   Okay, maybe I won't actually vomit, but I am really excited by this new release.  I'm downloading it now, this is actually the first time that I've actually had my computer with dsl on it set up so I'm even slightly concidering not upgrading to the newest version, but I can't kid myself, the new release looks so awsome that I have no choice but to install it.

Great news.
DSL runs great and I love the new mydsl feature, but I couldn't get toram to work.
error message couldn't find knoppix dir.
Hope it's just me, but the rest of the cd runs really well.

John -

Sounds like you and your team have all have made some great enhancements to DSL. I can't wait to get home this afternoon to download and give it a whirl! I hate it that Hasty was able to get to it before me!  :D

Take care,

Chris

I could kick myself, I forgot to back up one thing that I wanted, but that always happens to me.  I installed 0.7 and I love it, you guys are making great improvements all the time.  I've been truely impressed by how much you have been doing for this project.

[edit]
I have found one small problem, the version of sndconfig that comes with dsl 0.7 (0.57 i believe) has a segment fault when running on my machine, but installing the newest version (0.67) works just fine.

Thumbs up! You are doing a great work. I just love the new mydsl function. Keep up the good work! Just a question; is there a way to make your own dsl modules?

Keep on having fun out there,
meo

Sounds fabulous Robert S. and all you other gurus.  Will give it all a go this weekend.
One question: is Abiword extension up to date eg. version 2.- ish ? (which would be ideal for my old laptop for MS Word/tables file format compatibily needed for work)  Or is it only the much earlier version 1.xx deb package -something I found using Synaptic.
I might try the Open office extension otherwise.  DSL is about to totally supplant my lingering win98 needs on my main box by the looks of it.

I have just installed both the abiword and openoffice extensions, and they both worked fine. Abiword is 2.01 and openoffice 1.1. Really great!

someone needs to make a GIMP module.

preferably GIMP 2 but 1.2 would be fine too.

Posted by nucpc on May 15 2004,18:04
SaidinUnleashed, 'fraid I'm not a user of Gimp but I've had a go at making a 1.2 .dsl and you
can find it here,

Please give it a try and see if it's working.

Posted by nucpc on May 15 2004,18:17
Just to confirm when I say "try it", I suggest you only run it live until you can convince yourself
it's all okay...

...I've checked it as best I can but like I said, it's not a package I'm particularly familiar with.

Hey, I am not a Gimp'y guy. But it looks real good. Nice Job!
This is what I am hoping will happen. Thank You, nucpc.

This is great! I have just managed to unite the mydsl-function and the restore-function so that I have what I want working right off the bat. Thanks for a wonderful distro! The only thing I'm missing is mozilla thunderbird. I have tried sylpheed but we don't go to good together. So if it's possible to make thunderbird work with the mydsl-function, please let me know! Thanks again!

Have fun,
meo

hello folks.

When I burn a new CD with DSL and mkmydsl, (abiword, gcomburst, gnu-util), the new CD boot fine but can't load X server.
The home directory of damnsmall belongs now to root and the Xserver can't create .Xautority and co...
To make the new CD works, I have to change the owner of /home/damnsmall. I tape on the console chown damnsmall:staff /home/damnsmall. After startx, all work fine, and I have the new applications usable.
Is that a feature or a bug.
Sorry for my poor english.

Sounds like a bad .dsl.  One of those .dsl probably has a permission problem. As I saw this before, at that time it was ace.dsl and has since been corrected. Check the md5sum to see if a new(er) .dsl has been posted. Since extensions are user contributed, may I suggest to try first with the desired extension placed on a hard drive partition using the boot time option of mydsl, e.g. mydsl=hda3. Once you are happy with things then proceed to making the cd.
