grub config persistent home dirForum: HD Install Topic: grub config persistent home dir started by: bonarez Posted by bonarez on Dec. 08 2005,20:12
I've been editing my menu.lst and read about the persistant home dir , but can't find more info on this subject.the initial homedir comes out of the iso image, and then changes are applied from the backup. setting a home option in grub will create those files from the image and the backup. but will it be read from there again? ea if I add files will they remain there or will they be included inside the backup and restored from there? can someone shed some light on this? tnx bonarez Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 08 2005,20:45
I think the backup is restored after the persistent home is mounted, but i could be wrong.

If you have a partition or a HD install...remember where it is(eg. you have windows 98 on hda1, a 50-60 meg partition for frugal on hda2, a 256meg swap on hda3, and the rest on hda4) < http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Cheat_codes > 1. Edit the menu.lst with the cheatcodes and add mydsl=hda4 home=hda4 opt=hda4 2. Experiment with the other cheatcodes...like if you know you dont have usb, or acpi just add no usb yadda yadda (it makes booting a bit faster) Have fun bud The nice thing about grub is all you do is change the menu.lst and on next reboot the changes are automatic...no need to rerun lilo to make the changes active Hope that helps Brian AwPhuch Posted by bonarez on Dec. 09 2005,09:23
just a hda1 for dsl and files, and a hda5 swap think I'll better split hda1 up 1 for dsl and other space for files (makes easier backups too..)
but I'm more intrested in the cheatcodes and how they are handled by the kernel. for instance. If I enter the home and opt parameters. do I copy them first from the ramdisk, or does dsl handles this automatic? (I'm used to debian where I can/have to change everything myself) the dsl install is a piece of cake, and has a very low footprint making it perfect for my little old laptop. but I would like to see some more detailed info on the features. edit: I switched from a frugal install to the hd install, so no more issues on the home and opt dirs. thanks for your answers Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 09 2005,17:12
When I set up my persistent home and opt, I first booted with an unmodified non-persistent system and copied /home and /opt from DSL onto the persistent partition. This is not necessesary, as far as I know, but i think that if this is not done you should not have empty /home/dsl and /opt directories on the target partition. The boot script looks for these directories....if they are found they are simply mounted, but if they are not found i think it copies the files to the target. I'm not absolutely sure about this....to verify you can look into /etc/init.d/dsl-config.

I did try the home=hda1 option before i did the hd install and the homedir was created without problems.Don't know about the opt, but I imagine it would be the same. |
