Hi all,

I'm working on an Thinkpad 560 Type 2640T95 with DSL 0.6.2.
Because my tp comes without cd I did a hd-install, which went fine. Even X runs.  :-)

But I have two problems, which I believe are connected, but being an absolute newbie I am not sure. ;-)

During booting I get following message. This message is independent what I put in the lilo.conf (vga=normal, vga=770, vga=771):

Lilo 22.5.7.2 Loading Linux
Bios data check
Map file write Bios error code 0x99
you passed an undefined mode number

Afterwards I have to choose a mode. No matter which mode I choose I get on the right and left side a black area. Depending on the number of columns I choose I get in text sometimes on up and down side a black area.

X windows is running with any mode I choose only in 640x480.

I know my tp can do 800x600x8 (it works on win with this resolution). It's video chip is a trident cyber 9382T.

I search in the lilo user giude, but there my error code isn't mentioned. As I understand the information I collected on the web my tp has allready during booting problems with the standard kernel.

Well, has anybody an idea what's wrong and what I have to do to get DSL to use my whole screen.

Thank you in advance,
Niko

Don't have an account here, but my Thinkpad 760 has this same stunt with the mode, keeping me from having a framebuffer.

In addition to this, my Xserver's colors are all wonky, BUT at 800x600, i've seen the issue described here before as a Psudo Blue Screen Of Death (:P), but none of the fixes work.

Any more experenced hackers have any pointers for me/us?

Well my ThinkPad 750Cs still won't do X but putting vga=normal into /etc/lilo.conf keeps me from getting the "you passed an undefined mode number" complaint..  No clue on why you get the Map file error.
HTH a little.

When you installed to HD, did you use the "sudo mkliloboot" command, or just the prompt "mkliloboot" during the install? I wasn't paying close attention during the setup myself, and just hit "Y" when asked to use mkliloboot during the install, and when I rebooted, lilo splashed my screen with 99. Once I reformatted, and followed the dsl hdinstall again, I selected no, and typed in the sudo mkliloboot command at the next prompt, and dsl works fine from my HD.

However, something is changed in BIOS now? I have a menu option to boot Linux, or another hd partition? WTF? And this is still there even after I tried to remove the hdinstall. Searching forums for any clues here.
