Update DSL?Forum: HD Install Topic: Update DSL? started by: g.nixdorf Posted by g.nixdorf on Dec. 13 2005,08:31
I've installed DSL 2.0 to HD, added some apps and made some tweaks. How it's possible to update to 2.1 without destroying the changes I made? Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 13 2005,15:57
If it's a "standard" hardrive install (not frugal) the only way i know of is to back up all your changes and do a full reinstall. This type of installation was never a main point of focus in DSL, so there is no upgrade path.

Mikshaw:Thanks for your answer. I was looking for some information about frugal installation. It seems so that home, opt and mydsl are installed to a separate partition. But if the user installed apps via apt-get, the data at the "system" partition (e.g. /usr/lib) will be changed. What is the advantage to use frugal installation in relation to update the dsl? Info on Frugal:< http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....83;st=0 > It is definitely a different way to work than most other distros, although it is nearly identical to the way the DSL liveCD runs. Once you get a feel for using backup/restore, mydsl, and boot options, it can be a very pleasant experience. Upgrading is usually a matter of just overwriting the KNOPPIX file. With a new kernel, overwrite the kernel and initrd as well. Of course, with any upgrade you should take into consideration that some things in your personal configs may want to be modified as well, but fortunately Robert has been very good at letting us know which of these files are changed with each new release. The one drawback is as you said...keeping deb packages installed. The simplest solution i can think of is to create one or more mydsl packages using the files that were installed by apt-get/dpkg, but that can be a chore. Posted by g.nixdorf on Dec. 15 2005,16:30
Thank you for the response. At the end it's the easiest way to get DSL uptodate to install DSL with frugal and preferably to download mydsl packages. Some deb packages should be installed again. Is there an easy way to convert deb packages into mydsl? Posted by cbagger01 on Dec. 15 2005,19:27
