Wise and Sagely DSL forum members,

I have decided to partition my box, and install DSL. I know there has to be a better way, and after searching long and hard, I have settled on Linux. I fix problems with Micrososft stuff, write SQL queries, burn boxes, and design Crystal reports for a living, and I realize there's no good reason XP should crawl like it does, or all the apps should crawl like they do.

All that said, I have a few questions about DSL. First, will it autodetect my modem? Second, can I run AOL 8.0 as my ISP within DSL? I surf with Mozilla, but I connect with AOL. I live way out in the sticks, and dial-up is all I can get. I'll stick with AOL, so don't try to persuade me to switch from them. ;)

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance for the help.

1. If your modem is NOT a winmodem (IE: it is a real modem and not a glorified soundcard with special MSWindows drivers), OR if it is a LUCENT based winmodem then it can be used with DSL. You may need to select the serial port manually in the configuration, so it won't be 100% autodetected and set up.

2. AOL is tricky with Linux, but not impossible. I seem to remember somebody here mentioned that there was an AOL program for Linux that was intended for Lindows (now called Linspire) and can be installed in any Debian based Linux system such as DSL.

You would first download the *.deb file that is needed.

Then you "Enable APT" or better yet "Synaptic" from the user menu.

Then close the window when the installation is completed and then open a terminal window and type:

sudo su
dpkg -i name_of_the_file.deb
exit
exit

FWIW, a friend needed to use AOL on Linux and used the info at < THIS SITE >.

He wasn't using DSL (the horror!), so some of the steps may need tweaking.

Thanks for all the sagelike wisdom!

I do have a quick question. Any advice on identifying my modem as a winmodem? I think it's a US Robotics modem (I'm at work, and can't tell).

I appreciate the advice.

Go to system --> system stats --> pci

There it should tell you about your modem.

The linspire one is python based...no need to compile..should just work right outta the box
