I have a P 166 with 32 Mb RAM and I'm running DSL live CD. I know the system is very weak/slow but I can't even open FireFox to go online . Am I missing something here? All I can do so far is play solitaire Posted by AwPhuch on Dec. 16 2005,02:30
Firefox takes anywhere from 12-14Meg once open...On a system with less than 64Megs I would recommend against trying to use Firefox..use dillo P.S. Please remember...the fastest CDROM in the world is probably 100X slower than the slowest HD Brian AwPhuch Posted by daveydoom on Dec. 16 2005,03:39
Thanks Brian. I should have mentioned I did do the frugal install and it was still slower than molasses in the middle of January . I'll just chalk it up to low resources. No problem, I still like DSL.I'll try dilo next. And yes, I realize that a CDROM is much slower than a H/D. Cheers, Dave Posted by mikshaw on Dec. 16 2005,05:06
On a 166mhz with 32mb ram, you might want to make some changes to free up resources as much as you can. Use a very basic theme like minimal if you use fluxbox, or try jwm instead. Turn off icons, dockapps, and torsmo. Consider some low-resource alternatives to applications launched from desktop icons: midnight commander instead of emelfm, mpg321 and ogg123 instead of xmms, vim or nano instead of beaver, dillo instead of firefox. Lower your screen resolution and color depth. Create a swap partition if you haven't already done it. Posted by larkl on Dec. 16 2005,12:24
Opera will run much better than firefox on 32 M of RAM. It has more functionality than dillo. Dillo is OK, but somewhat limited.
