HD install problemForum: HD Install Topic: HD install problem started by: reuben Posted by reuben on May 08 2004,23:25
I have tried several times to complete a HD install on my Toshiba Liretto 70CT. The install goes to about the point shown below and appears to stop of freeze up. I have let it run now at this point for well over 2 hrs. This is the end of the screen output just before the freeze. "Now copying all files from the CD to hard disk this will take 2 to 10 minutes, depending on the hardware. Now the root file system is filled with data..." Then a spinning "/" is going on the line following the "data..." My machine is older (circa 1996), 120 Mhz, 32 Mb RAM, 1.6 Gb HD, the floppy is PCMCIA connected and the CD-Rom drive connects through the docking station. I have had to copy the knoppix.img to the HD in c:\knoppix and have been able to boot with the boot disk. But the system cannot boot from the CD. Now that I have given some background on the machine, could it be the system cannot handle a HD install? If so why would it work live and not install? Any help or other information would be greatly appreciated. I am fairly new to Linux but am a fairly experienced PC user. I want to be able to resurect this older machine w/ Linux and keep in going into the future while learning a new OS. Thanks :) Posted by roberts on May 09 2004,01:17
If you have a spinning "/" then I think this might be an older version. The copying process has been improved in newer versions. The orginal version was causing some machines to run out off memory while trying to copy. Might try a newer version. Also, if you make a swap partition that should help too. Use cfdisk to make a swap partition and make it type 82, and format it with mkswap /dev/hdaX where X is your partition number. Then reboot from cdrom so that it will be used.

I recently downloaded the latest version iso and created a new disk. I will try again with it as well as using the ideas you suggested. I'll post what happened whether it turned out or didn't.Thanks again Posted by reuben on May 22 2004,08:31
It's been a couple of weeks and I got it going. Thanks fior the help. I now just need to learn how to do a few other things and I'll be up and going. Thanks again. |
