Boot Windows With Grub BootForum: HD Install Topic: Boot Windows With Grub Boot started by: jak119 Posted by jak119 on Jan. 03 2006,00:56
I intalled DSL to a partition on my hard drive. Everything works ok as far as booting DSL but I need to boot windows I tried a boot sequence using the command prompt that I got of the wiki. That sequence was "title windows root (hd0,1) chainloader +1 make active boot" when I do that it knows that there is a disk there but it won't boot it says that it is an unrecognized format. So what should I do to boot windows 2000 pro?

you need to post a copy of /boot/grub/menu.lst and your harddrive configuration first.

title Windows 2000 rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 makeactive I got that from a google search on "grub boot windows 2000" Is makeactive one word in yours? Oh and make sure where you are trying to boot from - hda1 is hd0,0 - so you're trying to boot from hda2 Posted by jak119 on Jan. 05 2006,00:50

You didn't give enough info to tell what you did when you installed, but assuming you didn't repartition and format Windows away, then you still have a partition with Windows on it, is that correct? If you know that to be a fact, then just install DSL from the tools menu after you boot up the live CD. Use the Frugal grub install and the last step will ask you if you have Windows on one of the partitions. Type y and it will install grub correctly.

It's installed already and i didn't format windows away. I did use the grub boot which works perfectly I just wanted to know how to boot windows using the grub boot which I did find on google after I posted my question.

I have the same problem but the solution in this thread doesnt work for me. I recently did a frugal grub install and the windows stopped working. When I select "Windows" to boot in my original WinME (which is on hda1), I get the following on an otherwise blank screen:Booting 'Windows' root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xb chainloader +1 makeactive boot And after this I have the cursor blinking. I wait for 20 mins and nothing happens. But when I restart my laptop (Sony vaio SR33 with 128 mb ram) and choose DSL in the grub menu, it boots me to my DSL perfectly fine. I went and checked my menu.lst within the GRUB folder and edited some things to my DSL boot option and made sure that the section on Windows dont have any # in front of the lines. Next I boot again and still the same problem with Windows but the new DSL options that I changed in menu.lst were working fine for me. Can anyone help me retreive Windows? I wonder if this has something to do file partitioning type. Does anyone know "0xb" partitioning type is correct. I didnt touch the FAT32 hda1 partition when partitioning the rest of the harddisk to make room for dsl. Wonder if I did something terribly wrong and lost my hda1 partition totally. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Posted by tedmoore99 on May 24 2006,20:05
I had a similar problem when I was putting together my Armada laptop. After I finished the frugal install I tried to reboot and the windows on my hda1 would not boot. I rebooted from a Windows setup disk and from the A: prompt did an fdisk. I looked at the partition that had windows and it was set as active (had the A next to it) I made the partion inactive and then remade it active. I figured that since I had been messing with the drives in dsl (cfdisk) that maybe the drive was not being recognized as active. When I rebooted, everything came up fine. I would recommend that you be careful and don't delete the partion or anything. Enjoy! --Ted Now can someone help me with my soundcard problem. See my post. Posted by bokaroseani on May 25 2006,15:01
Thanks Ted. I dont have a Windoze ME bootable CD with me. The only CDs that came with my laptop were system recovery CDs which when run asks me if I would like to reformat my hard-disk...which obviously I dont. And I dont have a floppy drive. I am wondering if I can use fdisk from DSL and do what you say (i.e. make hda1 inactive and then again make it active). Do you think that might do more harm than good because I am using linux fdisk on a windoze partition?

DO NOT DO THAT! All fdisk's are not created equal.Have someone burn you a copy of fdisk from their Windoze machine, whatever you can do to try this out. Do not dispair, it's called the wonderful world of learning Linux! Enjoy! --Ted |
