Hello all. I want to install DSL (because I heard praises and grace to it from kubuntuforums.net and many other Linux forums) on my neighbours OLD A$$ Intel 133 mHz w/ MMX. It has a 2GB HDD (not the problem, DSL is only 50MB!), a floppy drive, and a CD-ROM drive. Now I figure this computer was made before booting from CD-ROM was invented, because the BIOS does not support boothing from CD-ROM. So, I need to get a start up disk or something. How would I install DSL? I have a DOS 6.22 startup disk, but I know that won't work.

BTW. it has Windows 98 on it already, but I want to remove it and put DSL instead. And it has internet, but it doesn't work (weird, it's disabled for some strange reason...). I'm working on fixing the internet issue right now.

Oh, and I know I have to download
Code Sample
B. dsl-x.x.x-syslinux.iso
because I read it from here [ < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....load.3F > ] . But I don't know what it does? Could someone explain? I don't have USB ports on it (they are disconnected. That's another project of mine...reconnecting them) only a floppy and disk drive (the disk drive can't be booted).

So my question is: How do I install DSL?

Also, like most other Linux, you don't have to restart DSL often (unlike Windows 98) right? I know I never shut down my Kubuntu box.

EDIT: I Finally found the page! [ < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Boot_Floppies > ]
So all I have to do is put the Floppy in, and press enter, and it will load the DSL CD? I'm downloading the 2.0 torrent ISO now (because I hate being a B/W leech), and I assume it will all work... I'll post at 1:00AM (EST) when it's done downloading if it works...

I found it, thanks for posting though. I have another question though. Since this is an old comp, which ISO would I use? the standard one, or the syslinux one? I don't want to waste a CD (since I only have 3 left...) to find out. Once again this is an intel 133 mHz w/MMX and is about 10 years old. 32 MB/RAM, 2 gig HDD...yeah, more stuff in the first post.

EDIT: Found it: [ < http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Syslinux_or_Isolinux > ]

Alright, new question now... Why was no swap partition created? Do I have to reformat the drive and re-install? Also, what would I do to reformat it? This computer needs swap desperately (32 MB/RAM). How can I make one?

EDIT: I made one. New question: I pressed F5 in emelfm, in my desktop directory, what did I just do? My Desktop and all the icons have been deleted, how do I restore them? Edit: CRAP! F5 is copy, F1 is refresh. How do I restore my desktop?

Just create links to your icon images.

Have a look at .xtdesk. The structure of the files is self-explaining! If it wasn't I'm sorry

edit: what about the icons in the .xtdesk folder on your dsl cd?

Press the "H" button at the top of both EMELFM window panes to see the hidden files that start with a period "."

Then go to /home/dsl in the Right hand pane.

Then go to /etc/skel in the Left hand pane.

Highlight the .xtdesktop directory in the /etc/skel pane and press the COPY button in emelfm.

Reboot and your icons should come back.

alright, I got everything up and running, and got Synaptic running purrr-fectly. I have this one lingering question though. What is the difference between a myDSL package, and a deb? I know how to make a deb (enough to get by I should say, I use dh_make to basically do it for me...). How would I convert the deb to a dsl package? Is DSL even derived from deb?

And (sorry if I'm asking too many questions) I want to get LimeWire installed. I downloaded the RPM and aliened it, and it says I need locales. I download locales, it says I need glibc. I have a feeling this is going to recurse, so I added my Ubuntu repos (assuming they'd work) to the sources.list. I figure, as long as I only use them to install these packages, it'd be OK, and I'll remove them later. But now I get an error when I apt-get update:
Code Sample

E: Dynamic MMap out of room
[blah blah blah ca.archive.ubuntu.com....]
E: The status file could not be parsed or opened

any ideas?

Edit: I'm also having problems with LimeWire. I have it installed, but when I try to open it (type limewire from the terminal) it tells me that the JAVA path is wrong (cannot find java, check your path). I know I have to do some symlinking because DSL installs java to /opt instead of /usr/java. So how do I go about symlinking, and putting together the java path?
