Ok, so I have a frugal install on my old P-200mmx with the following partitions:

hda1 - win98
hda2 - frugal
hda3 - (main linux data partition, see below)
hda4 - linux swap

I have no saved settings at the moment, just a fresh install. Here's my issues. any/all help appreciated:

- I want to store settings, apps.packages etc on hda3 but where/how do I change config to use hda3 (frugal install did not prompt me for any boot options)
- Where do I edit the grub menu? I know it's in menu.lst but atm this is in a ram disk right? Maybe solution to first question resolves this.
- "mount" is showing /dev/hda2 on /cdrom. This can't be right so where do I correct it?
- Is there any more detailed intro for newbies to DSL? I have check the main site, wiki and these forums but info is a bit spread out.

Update: maybe something: I can't even edit menu.lst to set default boot option. The file is read-only

I think the menu.lst for frugalled installs is in the partition you installed to, in this case hda2.  I think it's /boot/grub.
Don't think this one needs root permission to edit, but if it does (ie. won't let you edit), select it in emelfm, right click and "open with", and type "sudo beaver".  Root-level text editing of the file.

For storing settings, edit menu.lst to show where you want your home etc to be, ie., in the DSL boot section, add home=hda3 opt=hda3 and maybe mydsl=hda3 if you want extensions to be found there (make an "optional" dir and stick your extensions in there for choosing, or I think put them in the root to have them auto-load).
This will make persistent directories, eg. your /home/dsl will physically be on your hda3 partition, as will /opt.

Not sure about /cdrom, but I'm thinking it might have to do with using the frugal install as a virtual CD?  Might be a cdrom2 as your physical cd-rom?

As for info, there's been many attempts made, but every noobie's needs are going to be different, so it's always hard to try to get all of the information together.  Do what I do - if you find a usefull piece of info that might come in handy one day, add it to a text file with all of the other stuff you have found (mine's called, funnily enough, "dsl_stuff.txt", and has several years' worth of extraneous crap, most of which is of no real concern for most other users!) :p

Hey, look at that, I just realised I've been here for two years! :D

Oh man, just the same problems I'm having!
I did a frugal install and yes, it "simulates" a CD-rom, that's why it's mounted there. I have some questions:
1-THERE ARE TWO menu.lst grub files in different places - which one should I edit?
2-How can I skip the frame buffering, keyboard, usb mouse, etc., questions? I boot with vga=788 lang=uk, but I still get the questions...
3-Can I store the home and opt persistent directories in the same partition as install? have the following setup (I know, I didn't follow the advice...):
hda1 ext2 - frugal install
hda2 linux swap
Can I store persistent stuff in hda1 or should I create a new partition for that?

Many thanks

1) I've been using grub installed from a different distro, so i'm not sure...but i'm going to guess that it is in /cdrom/boot.
2) See if you have "xsetup" in menu.lst.  If so, remove it.
3) Unless you want to do some shuffling of files and remounting when you boot up, you must boot with "toram" if you want to use a persistent opt or home on the same partition.  Otherwise, the persistent directory will fail and you'll be back to using /ramdisk/home.

the menu.lst ... it's /boot/grub.
to edit,..., select it in emelfm, right click and "open with", and type "sudo beaver".  Root-level text editing of the file.

Hi RoGuE_StreaK, this is exactly what I was looking for. I cannot edit menu.lst

I did what you suggested, but "sudo beaver" doesn't allow me either to do any modification, from beaver, in menu.lst? ??? any idea why???

Thx and bye

Finally I succeded by doing it on the following path:
cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst

That's a combination of Mikstraw and RoGuE_StreaK infos, Thx guys
