well i decided i wanted to edit some files in /etc and discovered that it is non writable. Then i discovered everything is linked to /KNOPPIX (i think thats what it is, im a noob). Well i wanted to have sshd and apache start on boot so  i was gonna put a script into /etc/init.d but cant since its not writable.

how do i either make it writable or start stuff on boot using another method?

I am assuming you have installed to your hard drive.

To start sshd at boot time add the cheat ssh to lilo.conf file or grub/menu.lst file depending on which type of install you did (grub or lilo).  To startup a process at boot time you can a line to /opt/bootlocal.sh.

Be sure to read through the "Getting Started with DSL" that pops up in the Dillo window when the system comes. Some of these question are covered there.
