ok iv got a problem :(( i tried to install xfree86 and now when i boot it gets no where saying no such file or directory n bla bla, before altering the files to run xfree86 i backed them up by saving under another name ie with an _ :P and i planned to go in from the live cd anr replace the files if they didnt work, only problem is when i boot from the live cd its restoring from the hda7 and not letting me go in to X window to make the changes :(

Just read another post that sounds related and brought a question to mind. How much RAM do you have? Also, you can keep DSL from restoring by using the cheatcode dsl norestore when you boot.

usually 512 but at the moment down to 256 due to a dead stick :(

memorys up to 1gb of corsair low latency matched mem :D

does anyone have a link or know of any step by step guides for using Xfree86? i dont want to kill my computer again trying to get it running, but i would like to get it running to get video working to its optimum.

How is your DSL installed...  Frugal?  Traditional Debian-style install?
What type of package is your XFree86...  myDSL? Debian package?

Posted by brettdale on Mar. 08 2006,22:31
its a frugal install with a grub boot, the package is from the mydsl repository.
Posted by mikshaw on Mar. 09 2006,02:31
My theory on the cause of the problem:
.xserverrc is being backed up, but /etc/X11/XF86Config is not.

Did you have XFree working at all, or is it just not working after a reboot?
Is the XFree86.dsl package being installed when you boot?

Posted by brettdale on Mar. 09 2006,03:12
never had it working :( i think i will have to try with my laptop a live cd n a usb key first, just getting the desktop all running nice :)

Well, then....first thing would be to read the info file.  You did read the info file, yes?  If you know how to install a mydsl package then it was most likely installed.  The info file tells you the best it can about configuring it, but since every machine is different there's no way to do a step-by-step instruction for configuring xfree.

If you do what the info says, and it doesn't work, then take note of the specific errors you get ("no such file or directory n bla bla" is not a specific error message), and then come back here with the errors. Also try to remember what you tried so far.

well...your XF86Config file is nearly impossible to read, with the lack of line breaks.  If that's what your file looks like when you view it in Linux, then that is your main problem.

This leads me to believe that XFree couldn't read the file because it apparently is in DOS format:
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

Try the command sudo dos2unix /etc/X11/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4?)

got a new config from here < http://students.fct.unl.pt/users/fdc10056/XF86Config-4 > did a save as.
everythings set to be saved in the filetool.lst but the same error output,,, i noticed after i restart the xwindow if i look to etc/x11/xconfig its no longer there even tho i set this file to be saved in the backup process. would this error output be a typical output for if it was missing the config?

Posted by mikshaw on Mar. 10 2006,02:52
If the config is not there, yes it would be a typical error message.  To be honest, I don't fully understand how the backup/restore process works for files outside of /home/dsl and /opt.  I use mydsl packages for everything rather than using the restore process, so i haven't really done any testing of it.

One thing you might try, since the file is apparently not being restored, is to put the file in /home/dsl/ instead. Then add a command in /opt/bootlocal.sh to either copy it or link it into /etc/X11/

....never mind.... I swear this was only a one page post when I started this reply.....

Good luck.
