hostnameForum: HD Install Topic: hostname started by: bjh Posted by bjh on April 06 2006,19:17
hi all-is there a way to change the default host/domain names from dsl@box to something else after I've installed it to hd? If not, is there a way to do it during the hd install? Posted by doobit on April 06 2006,19:23
If it's a frugal install, then put dsl host='name' in the grub boot line. Or when you are presented with boot options during install you can put the same thing there if you are not using grub.

Doobit, perhaps you can help me: I don't understand where or how or why to use 'dsl' on the grub kernel line.Mine is kernel /boot/linux24 fromhd=/dev/hda3 root=/dev/hda3 quiet dma base opt=hdb2 home=hdb2 restore=hdb2 nopcmcia frugal write Sorry, I have not yet learned how to quote the message I'm replying to. Or to use these forums, instead of documentation, to learn how to do things. Thanks, Sheldon Posted by doobit on April 07 2006,01:44
dsl goes after quiet. Then put any of the dsl based commands. You quote by clicking the Quote button above the box you want to quote. You use the Search button at the top of the page to find more specific information.

"dsl based"? I hadn't known which they were.
Many thanks, I will try all those things. Posted by bjh on April 11 2006,18:43
doobit-I did not do a frugal install to hd and I am using grub... I previously tried the host=xxxx option on the boot line, with no results... also, I tried changing the hostname in /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig, which works (kinda), but then I can't sudo su to become root...it gives me an error message like "cannot lookup host via gethostbyname( )" (or something along those lines)...had to drop to runlevel 2 to fix it. finally, tried changing hostname in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts, but to no effect... Hi I have the same problem I did a HD install and I'm using grub boot manager. I want to have other hostname becouse I can't use BOX. How can I do this? Posted by roberts on Nov. 18 2006,16:22
For a traditional hard install you not only need to change:/etc/hostname /etc/hosts But then as root run hostname --file /etc/hostname Posted by The_Prophet_Jonah on Nov. 18 2006,18:19
Also, depending on your hardware, editing out some of those "no" options like (for me) nodma, noscsi and noacpi might give you a bit more functionality. And editing off "frugal" at the end.Since I do all kinds of strange and bizarre, while and at the same time weird in an odd yet vaguely disturbing sort of way... hardware configurations, tweaks and add ons, anything less than full functionality would be almost a toy. To get a good idea, when you are installing hit f2 and look at the list. Posted by The_Prophet_Jonah on Nov. 18 2006,18:22
and there are some sample boot lines in /grub/menu.lst that are commented out. Find a good one, edit it and uncomment it.
