CD-ROM Unmountable!!Forum: HD Install Topic: CD-ROM Unmountable!! started by: kendall14 Posted by kendall14 on April 19 2006,22:51
I installed DSL to a computer I'm working on at school and when I went to mount the cd-rom I relized something. The mounting tool in the bottom right coner is only picking up hda1 and hda5 ( there in no hda2 - hda4 and I checked, it's like that because I sat the porstions at the ends on the disk). It's not picking up the floppy (I think it should be fda1 or something like that) or the CD-Rom drive. I tried go to mnt/ and checking if it atuo mounted it but it didn't. I have the DSL 2.3 version. Is there a way to fix that tool (the one in the lower right) and mount them?

Have you tried opening the file manager and clicking cdrom or floppy then right clicking cdrom or floppy and then clicking mount to see the content? I think dsl auto mounts the cd and floppy when you install..hope this helps..additional partitions may be mounted via the slit by clicking

I tried that and tit worked for the floppy drive but the cd-rom throws a error.
That is the error it throws in the bottom. Posted by lovdsl on April 22 2006,00:52
are you chooseing /mnt or clicking cdrom right clicking and clicking mount...the error is common if you go to /mnt and choose cdrom...

I go to the file manager and try to first right click and mount the cdrom in the root dir but it puts that error in the bottom and same if I go to /mnt and try it on cdrom(which when I try that it geos to mnt/atuo/cdrom but I frigured that to be normal) .

That means that cdrom isn't in fstab file, so you can mount the cdrom only from terminal and you have to be root. try in terminal:
Another possibility is that the CDROM-drive is SATA-CDROM, and there is no way to mount SATA devices in DSL2.3 (in 2.1 it is possible) Posted by bwh1969 on May 03 2006,11:56
I have the same issue with a frugal install. I used to use dsl bootfrom=/hdaX/DSL23.iso (renamed the iso file) so I could use my CDROM but I got tired of needing the CD in to boot from all of the time, so after my GRUB frugal install, I get an error reading after it tries to install my DSL apps from the CDROM (why, I don't know, as I never suggested it look for them there)The error is: sr0 CDROM (IOCTL) ILLEGAL REQUEST. This pops up a few times and then DSL is up and running; however, with no CDROM access or ability to mount it with a variety of "methods" Secondly, unlike my failed LILO install which disabled my ability to get into Windows, the GRUB setup menu did not ask where I kept my DSL Apps. But I can get into Windows because it asked me that key question. I just load the APPS manually as I need them... I am running a 200 MMX laptop with 96 MEG, so I am fairly limited and loading extra apps anyway. Help with the CD would be nice, if there was some simple way of doing this. I like LINUX, yet somewhat hate it due to its DOS like complexity of commands. Yes, I was around for DOS and Win 3.1. Still, LINUX is fast, and it handles memory well and the people who use it are such a great community to "hang out" with on these boards. |
