I am trying to get my head around the bootline commands & what/which/where to put/make/hope the directories are...in the default Grub bootline i have added - restore=hda3 home=hda3 which worked nicely, the directory was created and most backup was right... i then added mydsl=hda3 opt=hda3 thinking that these directorys would be created too but after checking & a cupl'a' boot i ended up adding the directories myself, whilst along the way copying the mydsl apps into hda3 / but not into mydsl but later i did and left them everywhere... groann. But now ive lost the few aps i had as test-stayers and the mydsl menu.... I tried copying them into /hda3/mydsl should i download the kernel-headers again, if they were missing for one boot cud i have stffed it for ever?? mind you, im still stuck trying to get my network (bootmocal.sh) setting right but at least i have them saving... Then i found opt and home in the backup.tar.gz and just got too confised wondering where/what/when to put stuff.... im on a frugal USB/bootfloppy DSL 2.3, compact armada 7800 nocdrom 128ram with a /hda1/444mb hda2/777mb/swap and /hda3/6g ... I have been over-lurking & confused my self so if someone would be so kind to cast an eye over this please... Posted by torp on April 27 2006,12:25
so you now have a persistant home and opt directory right? if so, then just place your .dsl and .uci apps in the root "/" of the drive you are using for your persistant home and opt. dont put them in /root.....place them in "/". i feel your pain as it took me months to figure this out....torp Posted by robertbas on April 27 2006,13:44
if they go in / of mydsl=device...waaaaaa---why did I read about the mydsl folder?. The opt folders for 'installed' apps, the 'optionals' for 'can be' installed... we put the mydsl mess on / so what am i missing... It must b4 a just a menu or something..
yup, butz i had to make opt and copied contents of /tmp into /opt.. but only for a boot or two - -i wanna'd to keep them ( /tmp) rather than "/optional" them. I finally put them in / of mydsl=drive, looks messy, at the moment. If i have read right from lurkin' - i also have them in (new 2.3's way) /mydsl folders of my mydsl=drive. As soon as i can get my networksetings saving/working (typical bootlocal.sh setup) im bak to te mydsl quandry... I am dreading the reboot prompt "where to put the unsaved ext's" etc... as you say ill use / ... but why did I read about the mydsl folder? then as soon as this settles i can try the extensions & picking & choosing & saving & opt'ing & optionaling & mydsl'ing (emel button) - whohar-hehe-wawa - manys for that Torp.... the mydsl folder is a recent addition. Its main purpose was to help avoid confusion about where to put mydsl packages . I haven't looked through dsl-config yet to see exactly what it's doing, but you should at least be able to put mydsl extensions into the mydsl directory on the root partition (the one containing KNOPPIX and boot) and have them loaded atomatically without needing to specify "mydsl=" on the boot line. This might also work on other partitions, but i'm not sure yet.

manys tx for that...the last dsl the machine had on it ran out of room from oll the stuff i tried.. so i've tried putting home opt mydsl & restore on a big drive(hda3) with hda2swap dna' hda1... on the above install the install(floppyusb2.1img/dsl2.3) asked me where to put mydsl etc but when i realised i was reading or read it wrong (it is a little misleading-watch for a future post) ive have since reinstalled and BUT didnt get asked again. I bootline them on the first boot the folders have created. i havnt been able to test them cause I refuse to take the next step till i get past saving persistant network settings.... darn thing.. bbl |
