Edit GRUB menu.lstForum: HD Install Topic: Edit GRUB menu.lst started by: bwh1969 Posted by bwh1969 on May 13 2006,03:05
I have tried to edit the menu.lst to add mydsl=hda5 where my dsl apps are. I notice that even when using super user modes in beaver, I can see the file, but can't modify it. Being a bit of a DSL/Linux novice, what do I need to do here?

What DSL version? From 2.3 on it auto detects the myDSL folder containing your mydsl extentions. You just have to make sure your extentions are in there, make sure the folder name is " myDSL ".

Please use Menu --> Apps --> Tools --> emelFM --> emelFM as super-userEDIT: If you want to edit menu.lst, you need to use emelFM as super-user Posted by kerry on May 13 2006,11:39
What? Why not just tell him to right click the icon and select super user? why super user? You shouldn't use root unless you need to, especialy were installing is required. The myDSL extensions don't have to be installed as super user.

Using Menu or Right Click on the icon ... nothing's different. The main idea is how-to become super-user, right?

The myDSL extensions don't have to be installed as super user.

The question was how-to edit the menu.lst to add mydsl=hda5? If bwh1969 wants to know about it, I just tell him the answer. If he is not using DSL-2.3, he can put all myDSL extensions to /mnt/hda5/optional, and add option: mydsl=hda5 in menu.lst Posted by kerry on May 13 2006,15:22
Sorry, I'm pulling a all nighter and just glancing over the posts.

Actually, I was being a bit dim witted. I realized that I had to edit the menu.lst from the file that was on the dsl 2.3 partition. Got it this morning... I was trying to edit the one on the ramdisk. Your information and replies where helpful in other ways, reminding me of some stuff I forgot about this kind of install. I have not used linux (knoppix) in quite some time.I didn't know that in 2.3, it looks for a folder called myDSL. Had I known that, life would have been much simpler! But I already fixed the grub menu.lst Peace Brian Posted by hs7sv on May 13 2006,16:10
hehe ... nobody can edit the one on the ramdisk.

and I knew that AFTER I slept on it! But anyway despite my linux ingnorance in general... I manage to make my 200 MHz Fujitsu with 96 meg hum along again; W2K is still also on it, but unless I have time to make a sandwich, I don't have time to wait for it to boot or open apps. DSL just seems to habit a minimal amount of drive space and memory for apps. It seriously is a great distro for linux. I do wish there was a macromedia flash replacement app. Its absence does cause issue in web pages. "Installing" it does not seem to work in frugal for me.

Cool! I think DSL is the best choice for your laptop. How many MB are you using for swap? Are you using Backup/Restore? Posted by bwh1969 on May 14 2006,13:55
I use a 128 MB swap and I do a hd restore. I keep most of my apps from loading in my DSL and just put them in an optional folder. I do like the UCI apps... like opera because they are mounted rather than loaded. They actually allow my machine to run faster. I don't have enough ram, nor can I upgrade more in the laptop. The max is 96 so I can't do a toram. I hope there is a bigger concentration of making more UCI apps because of this:-) The DSL frugal is a great travel tip if using WIFI, as it just can't get "infected." This is why I resurrected the old beast> Now I use it for everyday browsing even in my own home. Using a Proxim RangeLAN wifi card. Peace, B Posted by hs7sv on May 14 2006,15:05
DSL-2.X added hack for extending ramdisk to use swap. You may try to use 256MB or 512MB swap, if you have some more space in your HDD. You may have a better performance. Posted by bwh1969 on May 14 2006,18:51
If I used a bigger swap... would my dsl 2.3 automatically just adapt to a "toram" cheatcode? I have a frugal grub install so how would I go about putting having it load with putting DSL to ram. Would I need to "reinstall" DSL, or can I add a line to grubs menu.lst?

You can add the toram to menu.lst
Posted by hs7sv on May 15 2006,02:30
You don't need to re-install DSL. You can try it. If you add toram to menu.lst, DSL image will take 50MB of your RAM. You will have 46MB left. Performance will depend on your HDD speed. I can not tell you exactly, its performance will be better or not. At least, DSL has more room to run, if you use more MB for swap. It can help you when you run more application. Ohhhhhhh... <heh heh> That was the answer I needed to see... I knew I must have been attempting to edit the correct file - by the way my head so perfectly fit the growing dent in the wall. <Grrrr.> Now, you've gone and challanged me to edit the one on the ramdisk anyway. Maybe later, must sle e e e p.THANKS! Posted by pradi on July 28 2006,11:59
