Hi there, Thanks for the replies to my previous post on swap file size. I took the plunge yesterday and did a frugal install (v2.4), which I found to be a generally pain free experience. However, I need to pick your collective brains again. Neither the floppy drive nor the cd-rom drive mount automatically on boot up, which I assume to be normal behaviour? I can mount the floppy drive manually no problem after boot up, using the box in the bottom right corner, but the cd rom drive just won’t mount. Each time I try, a message pops up saying “you must specify the file system type”. Could someone please tell me how (& where) I respond to this message? My second question is probably dead basic so apologies in advance. When I partitioned the hard drive I created a persistent home for data etc (hda3), which I assuming appears in emelfm as /mnt/hda3/home/dsl. However whenever I save something here, it also seems to save a second copy into /ramdisk/home/dsl. Is this normal? Thanks in anticipation Posted by mikshaw on May 30 2006,20:13
I think I can answer the second question....Your "second copy" is not actually a copy. When using a persistent home, /ramdisk/home is apparently created as a hard link to /home or to your persistent directory. I can't say exactly what the setup is, since i have not yet found anything related to /ramdisk/home in the init scripts....at this time it just seems like some kind of witchcraft. In any case, the files in /ramdisk/home/dsl are the same files that are in /mnt/hda3/home/dsl, not copies. Posted by Austin on June 05 2006,13:27
Problem solved. I was trying to mount a music CD, which as I’ve now learned does not require mounting. Other types of CD mount fine. A beginner’s mistake.
