I don't know nothing about frugal ! ! !Forum: HD Install Topic: I don't know nothing about frugal ! ! ! started by: godzilla Posted by godzilla on June 26 2006,16:32
Ok I will explain my situation and I hope somebody will help me this time. Everybody is talking about an Easy way for installing the system on the HD called "frugal". I'm running DSL with a floppy disk and the uncompressed .ISO at C:/KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX and C:/KNOPPIX/BOOT/. . .When I run the system, it is just running without being installed. So I know that if I want the system to be on the HD, Ihave to install it. Everybody is talking about the frugal install, but I have to say that I can't find any info of it at the Wiki, and nowhere on the forums. That's a faulty treatment of the information. My computer is a Toshiba Libretto 50M. It does not has any mouse on it, so it has only a touchscreen. I can't execute anything when the system is running. I know too that it will work probably with Xfree86.dsl properly configured. I can't do that until the system is installed. So, can somebody explain me step by step, more or less . . . how can I do a frugal install now ? I will look for the rest myself if needed. I posted three or four times before and nobody answers my posts. Thank you. Posted by piccolo on June 26 2006,17:14
I agree you and I'm sorry nobody answers your posts. < Frugal Howto > Posted by godzilla on June 26 2006,19:23
Thanks for this how-to. Do you know how can I start a PCMCIA CD having only 1 PCMCIA slot ? My HD was giving me lots of errors after trying all the things and I deleted all the partitions. Now I have no way to put the CD image in the HD again. So when I boot with the floppy I can't walk that further anymore. Is there a way to copy the image of the CD to the HD again ? Thank you, your help is much appreciated.

DSL should to able boot from a pcmcia CDROM drive using the boot floppy as you did before with the KNOPPIX file.Other Methods: -I never tested this but you could copy files from CDROM to hard disk using this boot floppy: < http://www.toms.net/rb/ > Infact there are a method to install DSL using only floppy disks with that "no DSL" boot floppy. < Floppy Only Install > -I guess it is more easy, to connect the hard disk to another computer to copy the files. IMPORTANT: If you will install DSL to hard disk booting DSL from KNOPPIX folder on hard disk, then you must create one Linux partition of at least 60 MB and copy there the KNOPPIX folder. Ok, thanks for the info . . I will wait to load the files in to another computer. Thank you and I will post my results here.

Hi ! I finally Installed DSL on my computer, with FRUGAL & GRUB. But I have some questions : 1) How do you create root/users ? 2) Does the system still running from the FAT32 D:/Knoppix/knoppix ? If so, what is the point of installing the system from the ( in my case ) dsl-3.0.iso ? When I start the system after the frugal_install.sh script, I'm not going to any installation. It just starts loading the system from the partition ( hda5 ) where I put the .iso to make the installation. Thank you for helping me, I'm a bit confused with it. Question I:I don't understand if you want configure many users or if you ask how to login with user or root permission. Question II: Right Godzilla, the Frugal Hard Disk Installation boot from the CD compressed image on a hard drive partition and the operative system is loaded in RAM memory. The difference regarding boot either from Live CD or the KNOPPIX file is that DSL boot using the boot loader installed on hard disk. Also you can have permanent directories on the hard disk but install not all directories as in a Full Hard Disk Installation. The Frugal Install is recommended instead the Full Installation because DSL was thought to be used from Live CD (No from hard disk) then you can save from many possible problems with the Frugal Installation. |
