I've got a similar problem and the checksums are fine, though I have not tried the Poorman's install. [my machine specs at bottom]

It happens with both dsl-3.0.1.iso and dsl-3.0.1-syslinux.iso

I burned with CPBurner XP pro 3, 'finalised and verified', Joliet,speed x4.
also tried: dsl-3.0.1.iso burned as ISO1

Now, I am not sure if that is better then my previous attempt when I let Nero burn the ISO's , and then I received different messages:
cloop: Read error, .. unable to read sector/
eventually it decides to 'wait 5 minutes' before trying again, but I am sure it is hoping I'll just shut off the power and relieve it's misery.

Of course, I could try and take one of those discs and copy the files over , as the old win95 machine can not read the ISO's [Joliet and ISO1]

So, what I have so far, is either a 'no KNOPPIX, sorry,(and it almost seems as if it does not even look) OR a bunch of unreadable sectors.

Question 1 - when using CDBruner XP pro 3, what should I have it burn as? Should I risk the last couple discs in the pack trying ISO2?

Question 2 - Is there anything in my hardware I have to do something extra special for?

Update: w00t I get the getting started with DSL screen.

Theory of cause - cd ROM gets confused, decides it will not read the actual CD. [low ram as well maybe]

Workaround - Poorman's Install [from wiki]
along with DOS capital filename tip

1. Grabbed the 'finalised' [I think] dsl-3.0.1.iso (copy disc image /saved project) burned in Nero at 4x speed.

2. Started up win95 as usual.

3. made a Knoppix directory [folder] and put in:
copied from the CD the Knoppix file
copied the /boot tree from the cd

4. shut down. Start in DOS mode [hold down F8, choose command prompt]
rename (using temporary filenames) to get all Capitals [as illustrated in Lucien's thread) [thanks piccolo !]

5. shut down, put in DSL boot floppy, start up

6. Rejoice!

Note, when I go to the DSLPanel>DSL System Stats>dmesg tab
at the end I see :

cdrom: open failed

amongst earlier:

scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
...
Unable to identify CD-ROM format

I am wondering if this is because there is no cd in the drive?

Oh well, I'll figure it out eventually, now that I can actually look around. As well as how to actually install it, partitioin, all the fun stuff.

I decided to get brave and try to install Debian. I was mostly succesful, even with a similar CDROM problem.
The short version of the work around - Take the cdrom drive and physically move it - So I end up with HDD on IDE primary master, cdrom on IDE primary slave.

I downloaded the debian-31r2-binary-1.iso
Mounted the ISO with DaemonTools
Copy disc with Nero Express [just because Nero Express annoys me, it needs a daemon to keep it in line :P ]
3 floppy images , boot ,root and cd-drivers, made with rwwrtwin.

Now, I am not sure after installation if I actuallly have the cdrom working properly. I am going to investigate BIOS settings for power management, perhaps the cdrom times out. Ah research...

This may only be indirectly DSL related, but perhaps DSL and Debian are affected by the same quirks in this old machine.

perhaps you just got a bad cdplayer. mine refuses to work most of the time.

Ah yes, the most obvious and simplest solution. I was probably in denial hoping Creative did not once again find a way to waste my time, yet now I am past that stage [lol I have reached the anger stage with Creative a long time ago]

Luckily I had a spare cdrom, and once I got rid of the Creative one, the install and read problems went away.

And Creative Labs is not done annoying me, since I swapped an Awe 64 value for the SB LIve! - which I will use on this machine, but means I need to get the Kx drivers because Creative drivers SUCK on windoz.

Did I mention Creative Labs annoys me?

For anybody keeping track, I also swapped the HDD for a 6.8GB Maxtor.
