You require root permissions to run cfidsk, try
$ sudo cfdisk

Right-click on the desktop, navigate to Apps>>Tools>>Install to Hard Drive.

Did you create a Linux partition?
After you do, you'll probably have to restart your machine in order to re-read the partition table correctly.
(In this case, virtual machine)

sudo cfdisk output:

hda1   Boot   Primary   Linux                             3220.44

And did you restart after?

Then the installation *should* go through.

I kept selecting hda2 and what I have is hda1. I finally got it to install.

Thanks for your help.

I'm having problems installing into VMware as well

- VMWare 5.5, 500MB virt HD, tried as SCSI (default) and IDE.

Everytime I finish doing 'sudo cfdisk' and create a 300MB primary boot partition, I reboot, and then VMWare/PC hangs on a black screen with just a "_" on it, never finishes rebooting. I can usually get out of the virtual pc, and stop the vm at this point.

any ideas?

You're booting to an empty virtual hard drive. I had the same problem.

Restart the VM, and hit F2 to enter Setup. Move over to the Boot menu and use (+) and (-) to put your boot in this order:

Removable Devices
CD-ROM Drive
Hard Drive
Network Boot

Exit, saving changes. You'll boot to the CD again.

so i've got a question

i'm trying 2 install dsl in vmware
creating new virtual machine
conneting iso
booting
when i see desktop i'm running terminal
there: sudo su
cfdisk
creating new primary partition ext2 (type 83) on /dev/sda1
rebooting...
then again terminal and sudo su
dsl-hdinstall
-target on sda1
-bla-bla (multiuser, filesystem)
install script: creating ext2, copying files...
install bootloader? - y. goes info about partitions, but then
modinfo: ieee1394: no module by that name found <-about fire-wire
cp: missing destination file <-??
Use [G] or [L] boot loader? - g
/dev/sda does not have any corresponnding BIOS drive <- WHAT?!!!
rebooting...
i've got something like this: L 99 99 99 99 99 99...

ok, once more
as previous, but boot loader - LILO.
no warnings, rebooting
LILO....
booting
ops!
Kernel panic:VFS: unable to mount root on 08:01

any ideas?

last dsl, wmvare 5.5.1

M|(R0,
When you boot up the VM go into the bios and see if the drive shows up as a scsi or sata. If it is shown as a sata you will need to enable sata support in DSL at boot time. Same for scsi drives. This is the main reason I use IDE on all of my DSL VM's.  :)
