I've got a system with Windoz and a DSL HDinstall.  I've decided to go with the boot CD and want to get rid of the HD install.

But how????

I would run the CD version and reformat the linux partitions. You might get a problem with the bootmanager though. Check that.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.

I had to jump through all kinds of hoops just to re-install when I got it wrong the first time.

I've had a second thought:  Can Lilo be modified to offer the choice of Windows or autorunning the CD?

Or would GRUB do that?

If I could do that, I'd just leave the CD in the drive all the time and run it when I wished.   :)

The boot sequence is controlled by the bios so you would have to change it so it would not boot from the CD to get the lilo or grub boot menu in the first place.  You might then be able to modify lilo or grub to boot from the cd (scd0 or whatever the cd device is) if they can see the device (not sure if the boot manager could see those devices ).  You are supposed to be able to boot from CD with smart boot manager (if your bios doesn't automatically boot from a device other than the HD) but I have never gotten that to work (at least on older systems).  Then there would be the issue of where the lilo or grub config files reside.  You could set lilo to boot windows only and put in the CD whenever you want DSL but I am not sure what you would need to do if you need to make changes to lilo.  What about a frugal install?  Isn't that basically the same as live CD except it boots from the image that has been copied to the HD on whatever partition you place it?

i done this in many situations when installing different versions of DSL. Do you know xfdisk (extended fdisk) in windows.

if you know then just u can delete the linux partition using it inside windows and no need to disturb the DSL CD also. You can directly create a windows partition from that free space if you want so.

You also have an option to install boot manager for windows in that.

Its working fine for me.

Note: Just backup your data anyway before any partitioning action

Later when i want to install DSL again i will put the CD and format using cfdisk and install.
