Hello Everyone!
I have a Dell Inspiron 4150 with a 30G drive in it.  I've played around but never seemed to hit it just right.  Here is what I would like.
1.  Frugal install in a small partition (60Mb)
2.  opt and home in the rest of the drive minus swap space.
3.  run dsl with toram dma and such.
4.  Have all the stuff I install be there after rebooting.

So, how best to lay out the drive and achieve all those goals?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How much ram do you have? This would be a factor in determining how much swap space you'll need.

Do you plan to install large (or many) *.tar.gz extensions?  This is a factor in determining how much space you'll need for /opt.

Do you plan to install programs using apt-get?  If so, you'll need to manually reinstall them each time you boot ("manually" meaning add install commands to /opt/bootlocal.sh).

The largest partition will probably be your /home partition, where you'll keep your downloaded applications and any other data files.
You could also keep programs in /opt, but it's more convenient in my opinion to have myDSL apps stored in your own directory.
