Hi, I am running DSL 2.4 on a Toshiba Satellite 2100CDT, (1999 vintage)with a SMC 2206USB-ETH adaptor.

My problem is that when I try to get updates, or browse the web,
the connection to my network is lost. Runs fine for several minutes, then no data flow.

The hardware works fine on win98se. The USB port works fine transfering files from a thumb drive under DSL.

When I had Debian installed (just the base system) I had the same problem. If unpluged the SMC, did an ifdown >plugged it back in > ifup, the connection was restored. Unplugging, and plugging in does nothing.

Once I get over this hurdle, windows is out the window. But I am stuck.

The same ploblem running DSL Live, Knoppix live, and Lycorus.

I think this has to do with the USB adapter.. I'm using a similar adapter, (model 2202 though).

I found that I got randomly disconnected regardless which o/s I was using - the problem was that the device works in certain positions.
I can only guess that the connection to the cables are not very secure.  So just find a position that's stable and tape it there, if this is also your solution.

Would this be an irq conflict?  check with:

cat /proc/interupts

to see what interupts are being used for the ethernet device.

Thanks for the input guys. Since my last post I have tried transfering files from a thumb drive on the same USB port. 60MB transfer OK. The SMC works fine with any flavour of MS, and on 98se on this Laptop. I have since started a Debian Sarge install on the laptop, same problem. I have found if I do a ifdown -a, followed by a ifup -a, the data starts to flow.
I have also found a few others that have run into the same problem
with Ubunto and Debian.

What we need to know is if anyone has had the SMC2206 working, and on what type of USB port. Then we may be able to find out why it wont play ball on my combination.
