Hi,

Before trying to install DSL i considered myself computer savvy, however trying to get DSL to save my configuration has me just about ready to throw my PC out of the window.

My configuration:
I have an old AMDK6 400Mhz with 128 MB of RAM.  I have two hard drives installed, the first one has Win98 and is about 2GB.  The second one has DSL installed and is 3GB.
When I did the frugal isntall using Grub i selected install to hdb1.
DSL boots fine and so does windows.

My problem:
- I cannot figure out how to save my configuration ( I read dillo, I read many posts to this forums) I need step by step instructions please. Where to look for a file, where to save it, how to save it, etc.
- In trying to save my configuration I tried to edit the menu.lst file but it is read only.  I found it using elmfm as superuser in KNOOPIX/boot/grub but it cannot be written to.
- I read in the post about hd5=home, etc, but I have no idea what you are talking about.
- I did manage to keep my extensions by copying them to the /cdrom folder, but I also read about /myDSL folder.  What is the difference? Is one better than the other?

There are a lot of questions, but I am really lost here. Please help!

1. < http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki....ings.3F >
2. Editing your grub depends on where you installed it.  Afaik there is no "KNOPPIX/boot/grub".  Try looking in /cdrom/boot/grub or mount hda1 or hdb1 manually (then look for the menu.lst in /mnt/hdXx/boot/grub )
3. You mean home=hdXx . This is for a persistent home so that you do not have to backup (and restore) things in your /home dir (i.e. see #1).  You can also do this for other directories as well, depending on what you need.
4. It is the same thing.  It would actually be /cdrom/myDSL I should think - newer versions of DSL looked for this directory so that the root dir wasn't cluttered I think.

Thank you, finding the correct menu.lst file to edit helped a lot.  I tried a few things there and now my savings are set.

The default menu.lst used hda1 and since I have my install in hdb1 I had to replace that line.  That seemed to worked.

It is still a little confusing to me were to look for files on my drive, but at least it is working now

Thanks!

The script probably just installed GRUB stage1 to the first drive it encountered, because that would usually be the drive that would be booted.  The first partition would probably be used for stage2, I guess, for convenience.  Not sure how it actually is - haven't looked at it in depth myself.

Glad to see it worked out for you though :)
