man doesn't work

on my hd install of DSL, man doesn't work; it seems to be looking in the wrong place for the help files - ie

man ifconfig

produces

ls: /KNOPPIX//sbin/ifconfig: No such file or directory


now i'm guessing i need to amend an environment variable here... am i correct?
