There is a tool in dsl called cfdisk. Using this u can partition your free space/ modify any existing partitions.

type

cfdisk --help

for more details. im not sure its cfdisk or fdisk. Anyway check it.

Get help for that from net if this is not sufficient. That will really be useful.

Else another options is

try to download GParted. It is a bootable live cd meant for disk partitioning. Its the easiest of all. It is the best partition tool so far i have used. Normally i format my partitions using it.

I think DSL comes with both cfdisk and fdisk - cfdisk is a bit more user friendly. And just in case, make a backup of important data from the existing partitions (there shouldn't be any problems, but you never know ...):

"fatal error can not open disk drive"

Sorry, forgot to say that you have to run it as root.

1. Use sudo

2. If you still get that error, then your hard drive is not in a 'default' position, and you need to specify the device after, such as 'sudo cfdisk /dev/xdX'
