Is there any way to display a boot screen like XP's instead of the lines of words displayed until the desktop is loaded.

Why don't you want to see the text? That XPee picture tells you absolutly nothing, those lines of text are very informative.

To a non technical user a boot screen looks much neater and user-friendly and will help attract more users and dent Microsoft monopoly a bit.

I was about to ask the same question myself.

I prefer to see the lines of text myself, but if I install it for someone else to 'rebirth' archaic hardware, a pretty boot screen would give it a more professional look to the non-techie, even better if it could have some kind of count (countdown from 10 or percentage loading, only roughly accurate so they know it is loading OK)

i think i can remember a linux distro i installed that said "press escape to view text screen" or something like that , i also would like to see a spash screen as an option

Look at the init options in fedora or SuSe.

you probably would get a fast clue on what exact commands to run to get a GUI on startup.

If you have Gnome installed, go to the control panel and it's actually point and click to do it.

I haven't updated to a full install of Debian just yet.

but I do know from long experience that RedHat 7 and later all have that option.

RedHat does it by default if you do the install from GUI instead of text.

I am almost sliding into the very bad Winblows bad habit of wanting everything to be point and click.

Also, when the init hits a snag, in the GUI an xterminal will appear and show the scrolling lines of text, which are really good for debugging.
So you don't actually lose anything by a graphical login option.
