Well I have almost got this 3.1 install tweaked to perfection.
Thanks to many of you for help and good posts.

I downloaded new mydsl packages and uci's for 3.1
but now whenever I reboot, they automagically install.
And there are Wayyyyyyy Too Many of 'em.

I want these extensions available for occasional use. I don't want
to axe them. I tried moving them, but DSL finds them somehow.
I marked the folder as readonly by root. No Joy.
On v2.4 they would only install when I selected them and
NOT re-install on reboot. That's the behaviour I am striving for.
I'm sure there is a simple tweak somewhere... right??

PS: This is a frugal HD install.

create a directory named "optional" in the same directory where the mydsl extensions are, and move them into that directory. They will be listed in the mydsl submenu for quick installation.

or...

use the boot option "dsl base" to stop autoloading completely.

Another option, but it won't be automatic, is to make several level 1 directories, e.g., games, office, devel, etc. Then categorize your extensions into these directories. Then at boot prompt use mydsl=hda2/games to load your games setup, or mydsl=hda2/office , etc. You could also edit your grub menu.lst for easy menu selection by category.

Those methods worked.

Just out of curiousity...
what exactly is DSL keying on to find the extentions? Moving the
mydsl folder that I originally created to a new location didn't keep it
from finding it. Was it that I just happenned to name my folder "mydsl"
to begin with? Or does it remember the name of the folder that the
extentions are downloaded to and look for it on boot up?

Upon boot up I autoscan level 1 directories for a mydsl directory. If found they automatically load.
If you specify a mydsl boot option then autoscan is not used and you get a faster boot.
