dsl bootup with really slow computersForum: HD Install Topic: dsl bootup with really slow computers started by: itaychi Posted by itaychi on Nov. 28 2006,14:48
i have a norhtec microclient jr. here which i'm trying to load DSL onto and use with the product we're developing here, we have partial success but now i'm supposed to reduce the boot-up time of the computer.setup: micro client jr. as i said, that's a 200mhz processor, running off a 256 CF card identified as hdc which i installed DSL on as a USB drive. i'm thinking about and trying out several options, i'd appreciate any input from you guys: 1. frugal install - am having problems with this one, as this is hdc and not hda, and will it even reduce boot-up time? 2. cheat-codes, tried to turn off almost everything except for USB, i'm not sure anymore which cheat-codes help boot faster and which hurt. any ideas about how i can minimize boot-up time? i basically need this unit to boot up in a minute and run a small application (using WINE) which hardly takes computing power. 1. having it as hdc or hda doesnt matter - it's just ordering.2. anything with "no" in front or has "off" general should be worth looking into. Also, if your cf -> ide supports dma, you should use enable that. Other than that, I guess you'd have to manually change the scripts for a frugal to load faster... I don't have the ability to write to compact flash, so am forced to boot DSL from USB pendrive. I've been trying with DSL 3.1 but once X starts the screen goes black and "Input Not Supported" is displayed. Any hints on getting DSL booted on the PC-Jr would be appreciated. |
