Hi,
i tried to install DSL 3.1 on an quiet old Machine (P100, 96 MB Ram) but i can not make it work :-( .

Installation or Live-CD-Boot runs all right but when x-server should start i get a black screen. I have tested all possible graphics configurations as far as i know. Now i do not know what to do.

The Graphics Card is an ATI Graphics Pro Turbo PCI (atim64-CT). It runs well under Windows 98 so i think it is technical ok.

Can anybody give me an advice please?

Thank you very much in advance
Jan

What kind of monitor?

I suppose you were configuring X with xsetup?

Did you also try vga= or fb bootcodes?  What about power options?

You could also load the full XF86 xserver instead, and use the ati driver as an alternative (you can get some video acceleration with this).

The Monitor is an 10 years old 17" Belinea Tube (Model 10 55 96), it is even under my my Ubuntu Office-Machine a little capricious... but it has built in loudspeakers and it was cheap :-)) .

Yes i tried ist with x-setup and i testet every plausible boot-code.

What do you mean with power option?

How can i load the full XF86 xserver and use the ati driver? Do you know a howto/manual for that? Should i first install the system only for bootlevel 2?

power options - as bootcodes.

see XFree86.ext in mydsl.

It performs the "starting-window" (i don`t know the right expression), where you can put in your bottoptions right well. So, isn't there a way to use this configuration, just to get a grafical surface and then try to fix the rest?

Otherwise, you may as well check out the wiki page on cheatcodes.

Beleve me, i tried out every possibility and i īm sick of booting, configuring x and getting a black screen for the 265th time...

If i understood right, vga=normal is the bootcode for the configuring like the bootscreen. If this is 640x480x8, why does x not perform with this minimal-configuration when the bootscreen works? Now i am at a loss.

Your suggestion to use XFree86.ext in mydsl is no solution for me, i  do not even understand the documentation (bad english / minimal Linux knowledge).

My very last idea is, to by an other cheap pci-graphics card via ebay.

So here i am again. Itīs definitely no "ATI-Problem". I bought another graphics-card (Creative Labs CT 6610 PCI) and i got the same problem. Also a change of the monitor did not help.

Win 3.11, Win95 and Win98 run well on it but the system is to poor to run the under Windows needed antivirus-programme. It would be a shame to put the old machine into the dustbin. Canīt anybody help me?

Can you try another monitor too?

Just a last resort, did you try booting with "fb640x480 dsl failsafe lowram noacpi noapm acpi=off apm=off xsetup" then choosing xfbdev server, then 640x480x8 ?

If you want to check potential problems in the logs, boot with "dsl 2" then run dmesg, and paste the output.

Also, when you get the black screen, can you press ctrl+alt+backspace to exit back to the virtual terminal?

This ist the second old machine i trye to use with DSL on which DSL does definitely not work (at least as no linux-scientist operates ist) and the products of evil Bills company run quite fine without any administrative intervention....

I do not want to qualify as a professor in computer siences. I just want an old computer run safely for internet browsing. I tryed 3 different monitors 2 graphics-cards and every possible bootoption......, read tons of howtos, forum-postings and manuals and, and, and...

Now (pardon me) Iīm fed up with DSL.

But irrespective of my frustration with DSL I thank your very much for your help.

Happy new year wishes
Jan
