Im trying to install to a pcg-505fx with no cd rom or floppy drive... It has no option for usb boot and updates to the bios to allow for it (thanks sony, ya proprietary *****) i do however have a 2.5 to 3.5 convertor and an mp3 player i can drop a laptop drive into (thank you archos for using industry standards) so i can put basically whatever i need onto the laptops hard drive....

Ive downloaded the iso, do i only have to extract it to the drive or do i have additional steps from here?

Thanks in advance for your slow, detailed explanation as am new to the linux world and live in portland, oregon (best beer and herb in the world, so we take things a little slower on the west coast)

I know this doesn't help with your exact question (and I know I hate getting answers to questions I didn't ask and that don't help, so I'll apologize in advance).  Do you know anyone that might have a PC-Card CD-ROM drive that you can borrow?  I have a PCG-n505ve - very similar to your laptop - that came with a PCMCIA cd-rom drive (PCGA-CD51).  I assume you lost yours or it didn't come with one, and they aren't exactly cheap on ebay (about $50+shipping).  If you can find one, you'll probably be able to get it to work off the CD...see this post:

I spent a couple sleepless nights trying to get this to work, and finally got it with this help.
