DSL on Intel Storage Station - LONGForum: HD Install Topic: DSL on Intel Storage Station - LONG started by: kmondsl Posted by kmondsl on Jan. 23 2007,23:16
I have an Intel Storage Station, which is currently running FreeBSD/i386 version 2.05.4066. It has a Pentium 266, 32MB of ram, 30gb hard drive. It was originally sold as a closed-source NAS box. Intel 430TX chipset. Integrated 10/100 ethernet, console port at 9600 baud, two IDE chains.NO VIDEO, NO MOUSE, NO KEYBOARD, NO USB, NO FLOPPY, NO working CDROM. I can telnet into the box as root, and have access to most 'normal' unix commands. I have network access (obviously) and can ftp out of the box. A harddrive recently failed in the unit (it has room for two), and because it used some goofy software JFS raid, the system is semi-unstable. I'd like to put a current minimal linux OS distro on it, but I have no clue whether or not it's possible to do a complete "headless" installation. The BIOS is something called "10BIOS" which looks VERY minimal (read: no options) --- the freebsd boot looks normal enough. Is this possible? Is DSL a good choice? Thanks Keith |
